- The rear axle carriers may detach from the SUVs’ toe control arms.
- A total of 5,408 Grand Highlander and TX models are impacted.
- Toyota believes 5% of vehicles have subpar rear axle carriers.
Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX models in the United States are being recalled due to serious safety concerns related to the rear axle carrier. If something goes wrong with the part in question, unsuspecting drivers could lose control of their vehicle and potentially crash.
The automaker has revealed that both the Grand Highlander and TX feature two rear axle carriers made from forged aluminum. While these carriers should be strong, Toyota says a manufacturing error at a supplier means they may have been produced with material that doesn’t meet strength requirements.

As a result, the rear axle carrier could break where it attaches to the toe control arm, impacting rear stability and increasing the risk of a crash. It’s bad news for Toyota as the Grand Highlander and TX are still quite new, and have already been recalled before.
In this case, a total of 5,408 models are being recalled across the United States. These consist of 2026 Lexus TX and TX Hybrid models built between April 10, 2026, and April 27, 2026, as well as 2026 Lexus TX Plug-In Hybrid models manufactured from April 10, 2026, to April 21, 2026. In addition, 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander models built from April 10, 2026, to April 27, 2026, are being recalled, as are 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrids made between the same dates.
Repairs To Start This Quarter
Importantly, Toyota says that only an estimated 5 percent of the models being recalled are believed to have a rear axle carrier constructed from below-par materials. There are also no reports of accidents or warranty claims related to the fault.
Impacted Toyota and Lexus owners will be alerted to the recall between August 23 and September 6 and told to take their vehicle to the nearest dealership where the rear axle carrier sub-assembly will be replaced if required.
