HWA recently started customer deliveries of its $760,000 tribute to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, but if you have a bank account that’s looking a little swollen and want something arguably even more special, it’s possible to buy an original car for less.
Mercedes-Benz only ever built 502 examples of the Evolution II and, as a result, pristine examples rarely hit the used car market. One of them has recently landed on Bring a Trailer and is already attracting plenty of attention, with bids quickly exceeding the $400,000 mark.

This Evolution II is number 401 and was originally sold in Japan before being exported to the United States roughly a decade ago. It was sold on the same platform for $425,000 in mid-2022, and is now up for sale again. HWA’s modern 190 E 2.5-16 Evo II is way more powerful and much more sophisticated, but we’re not sure it matches the cool factor of an original.
What Makes This Car Special?
Powering the car is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder sourced from Cosworth and producing 232 hp, thanks in part to a revised throttle body, upgraded camshafts, and a different intake and exhaust compared to earlier models. Coupled to this engine is a Getrag five-speed, dog-leg manual transmission that routes power through the rear wheels.
Bring a Trailer
Although this Evo II has been driven 58,735 km (36,496 miles), which may seem like a lot given its rarity, it appears to be in excellent condition. The Blue Black Metallic appears to have been well maintained and is free of significant scratches and scuffs. All of the wild original aero parts remain in place, including the flared wheel arches, the front splitter, and that iconic rear wing. Like the exterior, the cabin also looks excellent, with the cloth and vinyl seats looking surprisingly clean.
