The Legendary Moke Has Just Been Turned Into An EV With 44 HP
A new and improved Moke EV is set to launch in 2027
The Moke Californian is now available in a new and improved all-electric version, dubbed the Mk2. The classically styled car isn't designed to deliver blistering performance or an impressive driving range, and is instead all about giving owners the freedom to explore nature with its doorless, open-top design.
The new Moke Mk2, unveiled at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, builds on the previous-generation electric Moke from 2022, and features a larger 23.5-kWh battery pack. This gives it a WLTP driving range of up to 105 miles, which can extend to 115 miles in cities or coastal environments, according to Moke's real-world testing. That's not particularly impressive, but it should be enough for a day of local adventure. The pint-sized EV tops out at 53 mph.
Working alongside the upgraded battery is an electric motor with 44 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque. Unlike a typical EV, the Moke Mk2 doesn't support DC fast charging. Instead, charging is capped at just 6.6 kW, so it takes 2 hours to charge from 20 to 80% on an AC charger. Plug the EV into a typical household power outlet, however, and owners will need to wait around seven hours for a full charge.
Despite the modern powertrain, it retains the classic Moke design
Perhaps the most important aspect of the Moke Mk2 is that while transitioning into an EV, it hasn't lost the iconic design that made the original so legendary. It still has simple lights, a large grille, cute bumpers, tiny wheels, and an upright windshield. This new model can be finished in Sonoma Red, Laguna Blue, Venice White, Wave Blue, Sunlight Yellow, Sunset Orange, Shell White, Eucalyptus Green, and Palm Green.
As the electric Moke doesn't have an engine mounted under the hood like the original, it includes a small 3 cubic-foot storage area. Other key features include USB-C connectivity, cup holders (yes, that's a feature in something like this), and a simplistic instrument panel that's unlike pretty much any other EV on the market.
The original Mini Moke launched in 1964 and was built exclusively in the UK. In 1966, production began in Australia, and by 1980, the little runabout was also manufactured in Portugal. Moke International now holds the original European trademark for the iconic name and builds the revived Moke EV at its facility in England. It will sell the Mk2 in the U.S. and Europe with a starting price of £36,000 (about $47,000).
