There Will Be An Electric Corvette, But It Doesn't Make Sense Yet

The Chevrolet Corvette has been the quintessential American performance car for decades, defined by its long lineage of powerful V8 engines. Chevrolet revealed an updated Corvette with a new naturally aspirated 6.7-liter V8 in March 2026, giving fans even more reasons to love the C8. However, the Corvette of the future will be very different from today's. General Motors has long regarded electric vehicles as its "North Star" and ultimate endgame. During a recent podcast, Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tony Roma confirmed this remains the case, meaning the Corvette will morph into an EV.

However, it won't happen as soon as was originally expected. In 2022, GM President Mark Reuss appeared on CNBC's "Squawk Box" and revealed that an electrified C8 Corvette would arrive in 2023. That car became the E-Ray. He also revealed a fully-electric Corvette was coming, but failed to provide a timeline for it. When The Drive asked Tony Roma where the electric Corvette stands and whether it's still in the plans as of October 2026, he acknowledged Reuss's point and said EVs remain GM's long-term focus.

An electric Corvette is inevitable

"Mark did make that statement," Roma said on "The Drivecast". "You're not wrong, and the future, as we've said publicly as a company, involves electrification, heavier and heavier, as we go. Electric cars are the endgame, so someday there will be an electric Corvette, and I think that's what Mark was trying to say. Right now, we have electrification on the Corvette...and someday we will fully electrify [the] Corvette."

As Reuss made his statement about the all-electric Corvette in 2022, just three years after the C8 model was revealed, we suspect Chevrolet always intended to offer an electric version of the C8. But it may have changed course and realized the market wasn't ready for such a car. With models like the Z06, ZR1, ZR1X, and the new Grand Sport and Grand Sport X on sale, an electric Corvette might be a hard sell for the automaker.

Most likely, the C9 generation Corvette will be the first to offer an all-electric option. In 2025, Chevy gave us a glimpse of a Corvette C9 hypercar concept design. It was shaped at GM's European design center in the U.K., combining radical design elements that included gullwing doors, underbody aero like an Aston Martin Valkyrie, and a wraparound Koenigsegg-like windshield.
