This 1,000 HP Dodge Power Wagon Is Actually A TRX Underneath
Check out what a cool $600,000 can buy you these days
The Dodge Power Wagon dates back to the mid-1940s, and while this example may look like an original that's been modernized, it's actually something else entirely. Built by Desert Power Wagons in North Carolina, it started life as a 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. If you want a pickup that looks like a classic but performs like a modern truck, something like this might be perfect.
Known as Project Colossus, the Ram's chassis has been modified to support a third axle and two extra wheels. Those new rear wheels aren't just along for the ride and disconnected from the powertrain as we've seen on other 6x6 projects. Instead, this wild truck has a full-time BorgWarner transfer case delivering 6WD Auto, 6WD High, and 6WH Low operating ranges, plus a Dana 60 rear axle and an electronically locking differential. It also has Bilstein Black Hawk e2 active shock absorbers and Black Rhino wheels with 38-inch Toyo Open Country R/T tires.
The distinctive bodywork is the most significant change made. It features a four-door crew cab from Tisdale Coachworkers that almost perfectly mimics a classic Power Wagon. The front end is also just like an original and has similar headlights positioned on the front fenders and a brutish steel front bumper, now incorporating a heavy-duty winch. Adding to the truck's wild design is a stealthy Satin Charcoal finish.
The TRX's supercharged V8 has also been overhauled
We've seen builds from Desert Power Wagons in the past using Cummins engines from heavy-duty Ram trucks, but this particular beast uses the high-powered Hemi from a Ram 1500 TRX. In standard form, a TRX delivers 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet from its supercharged 6.2-liter V8. That wasn't enough, so it's now been fitted with a National Speed Stage-3 upgrade that gives it 1,000 hp and 925 lb-ft. Key changes include a new camshaft, upgraded valve springs and pushrods, a larger supercharger, long-tube headers, a 108 mm throttle body, and an improved fuel system. The TRX's TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission remains, and this wild Power Wagon also retains the TRX's driving modes, including Rock, Baja, Tow, Auto Sport, Snow, and even launch control.
The interior shares most of its components with a TRX. However, the tuner has given it a classic vibe with Rich Pinecone Distressed leather on the seats, door cards, dashboard, and center console. A JL Audio system has been added, along with a Rolls-Royce-esque starlight headliner. Not only is this insane Ram-based showpiece fully functional, it's currently for sale. The price? An eye-watering $599,950.
