Think The Last VW Beetle Was Retro Enough? Hurtan Didn't, So They Built This

It's a one-off commission from the Spanish coachbuilder

When Volkswagen discontinued the Beetle, it effectively removed retro design from the lineup. Still, an unnamed Beetle owner in Germany thought that the original could use an extra dose of vintage styling, and commissioned Spanish coachbuilder Hurtan Automobiles to create a one-off. The unique creation is based on the A5 generation of the iconic VW Beetle Cabriolet that remained in production between 2011 and 2019. However, the model is virtually unrecognizable due to custom body panels covering most of its surfaces.

In fact, the only carry-over bits appear to be the greenhouse, mirrors, door cards, rear quarter panels, and fabric retractable roof. The Beetle already came with bulbous fenders from the factory, but Hurtan took it to another level by extending them into the front doors. The fenders carry a set of round halogen headlights, and are combined with a bespoke front bumper and Bentley-style grille featuring gold accents and the Hurtan emblem. Other highlights include additional lights mounted next to the license plate, and the hood recess which is purely cosmetic.

Long-tail design

Moving to the back, the rear overhang has been extended, making room for swooping rear fenders and a pronounced bumper inspired by classic cars of the '40s. The model also rocks a larger tailgate with an integrated third brake light, two-story taillights, and aftermarket alloy wheels with five double spokes. While Hurtan didn't share photos of the interior, it appears that the one-off has gained light-colored upholstery.

We can also see what looks like the stock infotainment display mounted on the dashboard. The Granada-based company confirmed that the build retains the modern VW Group platform, safety systems, and running gear of the donor vehicle beneath the vintage shell. This suggests that the coachbuilt special is powered by one of the stock TSI or TDI units available for the last Beetle.

Hurtan shared the photos on its official Facebook page without revealing the cost of the conversion. Still, we all know that one-off commissions usually require a hefty investment. Interestingly, this is not the first time the Spanish company got their hands on a retro-flavored model, as it has created builds based on the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible and Jeep Wrangler. Still, its most famous project remains the Miata-based Grand Albaycín.
