The 2002 to 2012 Range Rover was such a capable SUV, that one wondered how they could really improve the formula for the all-new generation model, which made its debut in September of 2012, at the Paris motor show. Now that a few months have passed, they are starting to be seen parked up along boulevards of posh neighborhoods all over the world – seeing one is still an event, but as with the old model, it will eventually become commonplace.
So, in order to be informed about the all-new Range Rover, which is more expensive than the vehicle it replaces, MotorTrend’s comparison with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a good place to start. To make things interesting, the main part of the video is shot off-road, where the two vehicles are worked hard, and unsurprisingly, both impress.
The Mercedes is said to have a very old school feeling to it – a bolt-action rifle versus the Range’s coil-powered railgun, if you will. That’s because it has an old-fashioned ladder chassis, with the body bolted on top (like a truck) and three mechanical locking diffs, two of which are absent in the Range Rover, which simulates them using its brakes.
