Volvo chose the Beijing Auto Show to unveil a unique “piece of art” based on the interior of the new S90 saloon.

The project is meant to illustrate how this type of Lounge Console could look in the S90 Excellence, as the Swedish automaker is still looking for ways to deliver even more luxury within their range.

Volvo’s design team made sure that the most comfortable place to sit in was at the back, where passengers can enjoy the convenience of a center control panel with features such as heated/cooled cup holder, sound system, massage function and a large multimedia screen.

There’s also a refrigeration unit in the rear armrest, complete with two hand-cut crystal glasses from Swedish glass maker Orrefors – just like in the XC90 Excellence.

“We had such a positive feedback with our original Lounge Console Concept in the XC90 that we wanted to take it a step closer to reality in an S90 Excellence interior,” said Robin Page, Volvo’s VP of Interior Design. “With this interior we wanted to create a piece of art, a sculpture. We’ve taken many of the original concepts and made them come to life.”

Page also mentions how removing the front passenger seat was a key element, which provided “unrestricted forward visibility and the sense of space and light that this brings. It has an immediate and extreme calming effect.”

From a practicality standpoint, the Lounge Console Concept in the S90 Excellence offers passengers three alternatives. First, it can be used as a mobile working station, combining a fold-out work table and large screen for browsing the internet or video conferences. Second, it can be used as a pure “entertainment solution”, allowing you for example to watch the latest TV shows or catch up on a movie. And last, but not least, it can simply be a place of relaxation where you can recline the seat and simply enjoy a cold drink from the fridge while the heated foot support makes you as comfortable as possible.
