Like its predecessors, the current-generation BMW 3-Series is manufactured in various plants across the world, with BMW inaugurating an all new factory dedicated to the model in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

The $1 billion investment will create at least 1,500 new jobs, as Board of Management member Oliver Zipse explains that the production system being established there will be a leader in productivity and sustainability, thanks to the use of innovative technologies.

The German car manufacturer will commence building its best-selling model, the BMW 3 Series Sedan, in 2019, with a planned annual production capacity of up to 150,000 units.

Moreover, the plant in San Luis Potosí will also balance out production capacity at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in South Africa, which will build the new BMW X3 instead of the BMW 3 Series in the future.

Anyway, the Mexican plant will set new standards as it will comprise a body shop, paint shop, and assembly line; characterized by an innovative production system and comprehensive sustainability standards.

In other words, the plant will be BMW’s Group most resource efficient production location, as its use of renewable energy sources will ensure the facility will be supplied with 100% CO2-free electricity – most of which will come from a solar system on the plant’s grounds.

Even the water resources will be well managed, as the plant will include BMW Group’s first paint shop to produce zero process wastewater. The water needed for the painting process will be reconditioned and recycled.
