In addition to its racing cars, the Mercedes-Benz racing team had another vehicle that caused sensation.

Back in 1950s, Mercedes needed something to chauffeur its racing cars, thus the one-of-a-kind “Blue Wonder” was created. It was based on a 300 S model from 1954, and its purpose was to provide high-speed transport between the race track and the factory.

Powered by a 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder, directed injection engine with 189 HP at 5500 rpm from the 300SL sports car, the high-speed racing car transporter was able to convey the German car maker’s finest automobiles at speeds up to 106 mph (171 km/h).

Unfortunately, the original was scrapped in 1967. After realizing its mistake, Mercedes commissioned a $2 million reconstruction of the vehicle that was made possible with the help of documents from the archives. After seven years of rebuilding, the vehicle was finally finished (and unveiled) in 2001.

This, however, is not the one featured on Jay Leno’s show. No, this replica was created by a Swedish enthusiast, who died before completing it, but Jay Leno acquired it and made it roadworthy. But we’ll let Mr. Leno delve into the details.
