No matter how fast high-performance cars get, they sometimes fail to replicate the driving thrills of their predecessors. Case in point, the Nissan GT-R.

When the Japanese marque launched the radical R35-generation GT-R in 2008, it represented a monumental leap over previous iterations of the car, taking Godzilla into a new universe of performance, occupied exclusively by much more expensive supercars. For all its technological overhauls however, it was criticized as lacking the analog driving thrills of the car it replaced.

Some eight years later, is this still the case with the recently-updated 2017 Nissan GT-R? Well Autocar recently found out by testing the new model alongside its legendary R34-gen Skyline GT-R V-Spec sibling.

With a tuned twin-turbo 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine twisting out over 560 hp, the 2017 GT-R isn’t far off being twice as powerful as the R34 GT-R so it goes without saying, it is much, much faster. But without a manual transmission or direct hydraulic steering, is it still as enjoyable to drive as the old car?
