Likely to go on sale in the second half of 2017, the next-generation Polo is said to boast an improved interior, better comfort and excellent connectivity features.

VW engineers have been focusing on improving the Polo’s rear cabin space and the quality of its materials to outclass rivals such as the Opel Corsa and the next Ford Fiesta that is expected to arrive before the new VW supermini.

According to Autoexpress, the Polo’s current wheelbase of 2,470 mm (97 in) will grow by about 90 mm (3.5 in), improving cabin space noticeably. However, shorter overhands both front and rear mean that overall length will remain around the 4 meter mark (13 ft).

The new Polo is also rumored to get a pair of small turbocharged 1.0-liter units with around 100 HP and 115 HP, while the current 1.4-liter petrol and 1.6-liter diesels will give way to 1.5-liter units in various stages of tune (around 140 and 160 HP for the petrol and 90, 110 and 130 HP for the diesel).

Future customers can also expect so-called “big-car technology”, such as a color infotainment screen, capable of smartphone connectivity and app integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all but the base spec models. The touchscreen itself could be as large as 9.5″, which right now would dwarf anything that’s currently being used in this segment, including the Corsa’s 7″ display. Connectivity is set to be a priority regarding the Polo, as stated by new VW boss Herbert Diess who pointed out that the supermini might even get some of the features that will first appear on the facelifted Mk7 Golf.
