Production of the new Zafira has officially kicked off at the Opel plant in Rüsselsheim, Germany, where the first example of the new minivan rolled off the assembly line.

Updated for the 2017 model year, the Zafira is GM’s competitor to the likes of the Volkswagen Touran, Renault Scenic and Citroen C4 Picasso. Some 2.7 million examples have already been sold across three generations under the Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, Chevrolet, and even Subaru brands.

The latest model can accommodate seven passengers in a flexible layout, with the front seats certified as ergonomic by Aktion Gesunder Rücken – Germany’s campaign for back health. It also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as OnStar with wifi.

This first example off the line was ordered in red with a sport package from the Opel Performance Centre (yes, on a minivan) as well as adaptive LED headlights and radar-based cruise control.

The German automaker ambitiously plans on launching 20 new models between now and 2020, of which the updated Zafira is the latest.
