China Receives Less-Punchy 250hp 718 Cayman And Boxster Models

Porsche is introducing lower powered versions of the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster in an attempt to drum up sales in China.

While the entry-level turbo’d 2.0-liter four-cylinder of the Porsche duo produces 300 hp around the world, the German firm has detuned this engine to just 250 hp and believes this move could double annual sales of the models in China.

Both models will be priced below 600,000 renminbi ($90,000) which head of the 718 model line, Jan Roth, claims is a “magical threshold for customers in China”.

According to Roth, “A lot of the TTs that Audi sells in China, the smaller displacement 1.8-liter versions with rear wheel instead of all-wheel-drive, are priced below that, Mercedes too.”

In 2015, Porsche managed to sell just under 2,500 Cayman and Boxsters in China but with the less-powerful 718 range, expects sales to rise to the 4,500 mark.
