Subaru is celebrating building its 3 millionth car in the United States, 27 years after local production commenced.

The Japanese company’s sole U.S. plant, Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc, was opened on September 11, 1989 and currently builds both the Subaru Legacy and Outback. The 3 millionth model built was a 2017 Outback painted in Lapis Blue Pearl.

Not satisfied with resting on its laurels, Subaru will bump up production at its Indiana facility significantly by the end of the year. As a matter of fact, annual production capacity will almost double from 218,000 units to 394,000 and then swell even further to 436,000 vehicles by 2019.

The expansion of production will help cater for increased Subaru sales in North America and can largely be accounted for by the impending addition of the Subaru Impreza to the production line. In 2018, the facility will start building an all-new 3-row crossover for the automaker.
