There’s no doubt that the Porsche 918 Spyder is a blistering fast machine, but does it have what it takes to beat an airplane in a race?

German motoring TV show “Grip – Das Motormagazin” definitely thinks so, as they strapped their test driver, Matthias Malmedie, inside the hybrid hypercar and raced it against an airplane.

The Porsche 918 Spyder then unleashed its 887 HP and 1,280 Nm (940 lb-ft) of torque, developed by its hybrid powertrain and pushed to all four corners through a 7-speed automatic gearbox, at the Zweibrucken airport, at speeds of over 300 km/h (186 mph), in an attempt to cover the same distance as a Zivko Edge 540 V3 aircraft more quickly.

The footage might remind you of the old Top Gear, when Jezza, Captain Slow and The Hamster used to be in charge of the world’s most popular car show. Ladies and gentlemen, this would be a good time to place your bets!
