About 40 percent of all Nissan X-Trails sold are in the range-topping Tekna grade, so the next logical step for the automaker is to introduce a more powerful engine, which could boost sales furthermore.

Set to take on the Skoda Kodiaq, with its 2.0-liter mill that develops 187 horsepower, and the Hyundai Santa Fe, which comes with a 2.2-liter diesel, rated at 194 HP, the 2018 Nissan X-Trail will add a 187 HP 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel.

The unit will complement the brand’s UK range and sit above the current 160 HP 1.6-liter petrol and the 128 HP diesel, improving the SUV’s towing ability and cutting down the CO2 emissions, as it will be Euro 6 compliant, according to AutoExpress, citing Nissan Europe’s VP, James Wright.

Besides the addition of the new engine, the 2018 Nissan X-Trail is also expected to pack some minor styling tweaks, which could include refreshed lighting units and updated bumpers, joined by a few cabin mods, but these have yet to be confirmed.

Rumor has it that the SUV will also add new technology, along with the semi-autonomous driving tech, and a new Premium trim as well.
