This 2018 Ford Mustang Prototype Could Be Packing Fresh Sheetmetal, 10-Speed Auto

It hasn’t even been two years since Ford started selling the new sixth-generation Mustang. And in that time, the pony car has been an unbridled success for the Blue Oval – both at home and abroad.

But Ford isn’t about to sit on its proverbial laurels and lose ground to its rivals, so it’s working on a refresh for the all-American sports car. And that’s just what we appear to have here.

Spied undergoing testing near the Ford plant in Michigan by one of our readers, this heavily camouflaged prototype looks like a Mustang that could be packing some revisions. The updated model is tipped to benefit from revised sheetmetal – particularly at the front and rear ends. It’s also expected to get a new optional ten-speed automatic transmission, co-developed with GM and already installed on the latest Chevy Camaro – the Mustang’s arch-nemesis.

The jury’s still out on just which versions of the Mustang might get the new slushbox: Ford currently offers the model with four, six, or eight cylinders. All versions currently come standard with a six-speed manual transmission and (save for the Shelby GT350 and GT350R) are offered with an optional six-speed automatic.

The introduction of the new ten-speed promises to improve refinement and fuel economy, which is already rated at 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway in EcoBoost coupe form.
