Jeff Gordon has announced that he will race Cadillac’s bold new DPi-V.R prototype during next season’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The four-time NASCAR champion officially retired for NASCAR competition in 2015 but this year, has competed in eight events, filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Joining Gordon behind the wheel of the prototype will by Ricky and Jordan Taylor as well as Max Angelelli (for the endurance rounds), making up the Wayne Taylor Racing squad.

The model will make its public testing debut at the IMSA-sanctioned test on the Daytona International Raceway on December 13-14 and make its competitive debut at the Rolex 24 in January. Despite his extensive racing career, it will be the first time Gordon has raced at Daytona since 2007.

Speaking of his signing with the team, Gordon said “When I announced I would no longer be competing full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, my hope was that I would get an opportunity like this to compete again in such a prestigious event – with Konica Minolta and Wayne Taylor Racing – with the hopes of winning it this time. I know that Ricky and Jordan are super-fast, and I believe it will be a very strong combination.”

Underpinning the Cadillac DPi-V.R is a Dallara LMP2 chassis while power is provided by a 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine.
