- Toyota unveiled the new DKR GR FC Hilux for Dakar 2027.
- The new race truck is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.
- Twin-turbo V6 Hilux race trucks will keep chasing the overall win.
Gazoo Racing has shared the first photos of the new DKR GR FC Hilux prototype, setting its sights on the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. The rally truck trades its ICE for a hydrogen fuel cell setup, serving as a testbed for future production models.
The wild new truck is based on the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, which will also participate in the race and is powered by a twin-turbo V6. The hydrogen-burning truck is distinguished by a unique livery with white and blue graphics.

The FC retains the custom bodywork and chassis of the original rally truck, featuring a significantly shorter wheelbase compared to the roadgoing Hilux. It also has high-clearance fenders framing the oversized grippy tires and long-travel suspension.
Toyota didn’t share the output of the electric motors or the estimated range of the FCEV system between refueling stops. The V6-powered version is capped at 400 hp (298 kW / 405 PS) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft) of torque by FIA regulations. The big difference is that fuel cell operation emits water instead of CO2, something that can come in handy if the team gets stranded in the desert.

The DKR GR FC Hilux will compete in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category for experimental vehicles. The plan is to cover over 1,000 km (621 miles) of difficult terrain across 13 stages. According to Toyota, the goal is to develop the technology “with a focus on fuel cell downsizing, improved cooling and enhanced durability”.

Toyota has already confirmed it will roll out an FCEV variant of the production Hilux in 2028. The upcoming road-legal truck targets 248 miles (400 km) of range and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs), offering an alternative to the fully electric and mild-hybrid diesel variants.
The rally prototype will be joined by Gazoo Racing’s primary Dakar contender – the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+. The Hilux rally program has been quite successful in desert rallying over the past few years, securing four overall victories in Dakar (2019, 2022, 2023, 2025). Still, in the most recent rally of 2026, the Dacia Sandrider claimed the top spot after mechanical trouble sidelined the leading Toyota.
