According to a recent report, the next-generation Mercedes CLS will become the first model to be offered with a hybridized AMG engine.

Motoring says the powertrain is known as the “53” and it will consist of a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The engine will reportedly produce 429 hp (320 kW), while the electric motor contributes an additional 67 hp (50 kW). This means the powertrain could deliver a combined output of 496 hp (370 kW).

That number pales in comparison to the 577 hp (430 kW) developed by the CLS63 S but the engine reportedly isn’t destined for full-fledged AMG models. Instead, it will be used on the warmed over AMGs such as the C43, GLC43, and E43.

The engine is rumored to debut at Los Angeles Auto Show in November and it will presumably be shown in the CLS53 AMG. The model will slot below the CLS63 which is expected to use the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the E63 that develops 563 hp (400 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750Nm) of torque.

Following its debut in the CLS, the engine will be offered in a variety of other models including everything from the C-Class to the GLS.
