Prior to the Frankfurt Motor Show, Williams Advanced Engineering has unveiled a lightweight electric car platform.

Baptized FW-EVX, the platform may not have a very catchy name but it does pack some impressive technologies. For starters, the platform incorporates carbon fiber reinforced suspension components that are 40 per cent lightweight than traditional aluminium wishbones.

Elsewhere, the platform includes exceptionally strong 3D structures to support the batteries. Beyond ensuring that the platform is strong, these structures allow the battery pack and cooling systems to be integrated together.

Williams hasn’t said if it has any current plans to offer the platform to car manufacturers but technical director Paul McNamara believes it could prove a step forward in the world of EVs.

“Our way of thinking around how to create a tightly integrated lightweight chassis and powertrain package have the potential to greatly increase the competitiveness of the next generation of electric vehicles,” he said.
