Is The Mustang GT350R Worth The 10k Premium Over The GT350?

You pays your money, you get your high-performance coupe, but what if you have to choose between Ford’s Mustang GT350 and GT350R?

After going for a spin in the former earlier this month, Alexander Salomon, who is the man behind a few interesting supercar comparisons, has now taken the hotter, more expensive and more powerful GT350R out for a short drive.

Immediately after stepping inside, he made a remark on the bucket seats and steering wheel and then went on to talk about the car’s adjustable magnetic suspension that could make a big difference in choosing this over the lesser model. The highest-revving production V8 engine the Blue Oval ever assembled, which has a redline that begins at 8,250 rpm, has been brought into discussion too, and so has the quad-processor that is behind the infotainment system.

However, is a short drive really enough to put a stamp on a car and recommend it over a cheaper version? Well, Salomondrin thinks so, and his opinion should be taken into consideration since his personal garage is filled with rare exotics, such as the Pagani Huayra or Porsche 918 Spyder, to name just a couple of them.

Worth it is a difficult question. It’s absolutely worth it if the R is the one you really want. I’ve got the “mere” GT and that’s really all the Mustang I can use on a daily basis. So, for me, no, anything that costs a lot more and moves the needle only a little bit is never worth it.

The 2017 GT Premium (base) costs 40% less than the GT 350 R (base). I’m with you. Without owning one yet (that’s the kind of thing I say to my wife…”yet”), I’d go with the GT.

Unfortunately, this review is a bit tainted because they guy is in love with the car. I’m not faulting him for it, other than it is an obviously biased review.

I want to point out that the top line of the infotainment screen is almost identical to the one in my Ram 1500 – specifically time and temperature. Looks like the exact layout and font.

Keep at her. They wear down eventually. Take her for a test drive in the convertible.

Dealers here are marking up the regular GT350 by $40K which is not worth it. Plus it makes you worry about service and customer care down the line.

    • Bob White

Don’t blame the dealers. Only idiots pay sticker or above it for any car. This is the hot new thing this year and by next year, anybody will get a healthy discount.

i definitely expected better aesthetics, specially those amateur rims

Out here in the bay area the GT 350 has a $25K mark up and the GT 350R has a $60K mark up.

Worth it? Only as an investment piece.

Dealers are asking 100K for an R-model. They’re even asking 7-10k markup for a non-R-model. Is the 350R worth it when a Z06 or Viper TA would walk around it on a track? It’s just the hot-new-it-car of the moment. Happened when the hellcat came out, happened when the old Boss302 came out, happened when the Camaro Z28 came out…
