As if the DeLorean wasn’t a magnet for bad “Back to the Future” jokes already, a man was caught doing 89 mph (143 km/h) in a DMC-12. Great Scott!

As a gear head and a Back to the Future fan, Nigel Mills, bought a DMC-12 to enjoy it on the road. Or at least that’s what he said to the cops after being caught doing 89 (143 km/h) mph.

According to The Telegraph, the 55-year-old man denied that he was attempting to time travel, saying:

“I wasn’t trying to time travel. It was at 11am on Sunday and the road was completely clear. I was being prosecuted for going 89mph (143 km/h) in a DeLorean, wasn’t something special meant to happen at 88mph (141 km/h)?”

That’s exactly what a time traveler might say, although he also mentioned that he rarely drives the two-seater and that he’d taken it for a bit of “run around” that day.

“Ironically I was done for speeding in the car that doesn’t get on the road much – I only drive it three or four times a year and did just 200 miles last year,” he said.

Mr. Mills fought the citation in court, appearing before Chelmsford magistrates, but the case was thrown out after the cops who ticketed him failed to show up.

He decided to contest the accusation after he a group of travelers set up camp in his company’s parking lot.

“Why should I pay this speeding fine while they would get away with it? I’m pleased at the result, but I wish that the police could do a better job when it comes to real crimes against people.”

Sounds pretty heavy, Mr. Mills.
