These Spy Shots Just Go To Show How Many Different Vehicles GM Produces

In the off-chance anyone needed a reminder of the variety of vehicles General Motors churns out, here’s a look at a small cross-section of the new metal testing in just one place.

Even with Hummer, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Saab out of the picture, it still runs the Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac, each with its own extensive product portfolio.

And then, of course, there are its overseas brands like Opel, Vauxhall, Holden and a whole lot of labels under which it operates in China alone. That amounts to an unfathomable array of vehicles, and before it can even begin production and marketing, it has to design, engineer, develop, and test each one.

This latest crop of vehicles was spotted testing in Colorado, alongside the new Buick LaCrosse and  Corvette prototypes we brought you the other day. As far as spy shots go, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about any of them. But as a group, they just go to show the breadth and scope of the industrial powerhouse that is GM.

There’s a a Buick Encore, a GMC Yukon XL, a couple of Savana vans, a Cadillac CTS and a CT6. And that’s just a tiny portion of the vehicles GM makes, not even getting into the Chevy lineup that encompasses the largest product portfolio under the huge corporate umbrella popping out of downtown Detroit and covering the entire globe.

Thanks to Brett for sharing the photos.

      I didn’t see any honda’s ?

      • Random stranger

I’d rather have a Honda Fit than a Cadillac CT6.

        • Zandit75

And that right there illustrates what is wrong with this world!

        • TheBelltower

Mmmmkay then. You take your Fit, I’ll gladly take the CT6.

Alright then, see you on the highway’s shoulder.

….. where you’ll be after your Honda Chit gets run off the road.

        No, Bunch of GM cars.

Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden all use a mix of badge engineered Chevy, Buick, and even each other’s models so it’s not like they spend a ton of time and money developing individual models for each brand. Cadillac also does their own thing and other than sharing their platform with the Camaro Cadillac is very independent.

Where was for example the original Opel Insignia platform developed? Where was the car styled? That platform was shared by the Malibu and now the new longer wheelbase, lighter platform and probably some structure also. This time the Malibu was the first on the new platform. But the old Insignia came out a year before its Regal near-twin, and the same thing is happening again.

So anyway I’ve never read anything about where exactly various international GM models and platforms are actually designed. I’m guessing that for example the Insignia/Regal was designed in Germany, and the platform was a collaboration. Maybe.

      • Kash

The current Regal was designed by Mark Adams and Malcolm Ward, Malcolm works for GM Europe and Mark has recently returned to GM Europe to develop better links between Opel and Buick. So it’s a car designed mostly in Europe by Europeans. It sounds like most of the Buicks are going to designed in Europe, specifically Germany, as long as Mark is at the helm. The platform (Epsilon 2) was designed in Germany mostly by Opel with Saab, at the time, taking over the AWD and safety aspects of the platform.

    Really slow news days?

Quality over quantity. The Tesla Model S is better than all the cars GM has ever produced.

    • Kash

That’s why tons of people are complaining about things like the quality of the seals around the doors? Plus i’ve never heard of a GM vehicle opening it’s own door and hitting things like garage roofs and other things like the Model X has been doing recently, plus randomly opening and closing their doors to the point of being unusable. Then there was that pesky problem where the Model S door handles wouldn’t pop out which for some reason also made the car undrivable because it would shift itself back into park until the problem was fixed. Oh, and then they were catching on fire while charging. If i’m not mistaken a couple people had their house catch on fire because of that problem as well.

Quality over quantity yes, but at least GM is turning a profit and isn’t still bleeding cash like a gut fish every quarter. Tesla needs to figure out their own quality issues and figure out their software issues.

Best GM car is the Chevy Volt, then the Vette.

“…there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about any of them.”

This is all that needed to be said. They’re nice cars, but you could see any of this at a dealership. Not news.

maybe they should make a good one.

    • ScootGaloot

Perhaps you need to take some kaopectate.
