Ferrari 488 ‘GTO’ Shows Its Face In New Leaked Image

A grainy shot from Ferrari’s recent preview event reveals the aggressive front end of the upcoming 488 ‘GTO’.

The picture has been leaked on Instagram, giving us a clear look on the new styling and aero choices the so-called 488 GTO will have.

Rumored to offer at least 700hp, the new hardcore mid-engined Ferrari will be powered by an evolution of the V8 found in the 488 Challenge race car. The engine is reportedly going to be 10 percent lighter than the 488 GTB’s stock twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8.

The same report goes on saying that the significantly revised bodywork will be 20 percent more aerodynamically efficient and feature the biggest amount of carbon fiber Ferrari has ever put in a normal, series-production model.

Ferrari is said to have taken the lessons learned from the GTE race cars and applied them to the aero agenda of the new 488 ‘GTO’ which will also feature a new Sideslip Management system, as well as a revised steering ratio and a new, more direct software for the dual-clutch transmission.

The hardcore version of the Ferrari 488 is believed to be coming to the Geneva Motor Show for its public debut, which -judging by just how finished the car looks- should prove to be true.

      I’d say he needs to…focus. Flavio Manzoni has created some amazing design during his career, but lately he appears to have lost it completely. His Ferraris just don’t look good, and Ferraris should look good. He is a good designer, but he needs to rethink the works he is doing.

        I kind of feel Ferrari is missing the times when Pininfarina gave their cars the final touch; I think many of those weird details would look different if they were still cooperating with Pininfarina…

          Agreed, FCA should have acquired a design firm like VW did with Italdesign and let them do all the work.

        we’re in an era of supercars (especially track focused like the new gto) where function over form is more so now over previous generations. With aero taking hold- rise in tech, software & materials. Adding in needing less emissions, lowering displacement/adding turbos & electirc power/battery tech. Base supercars I think will continue to have subverted inlets, large areo and scoops for another gen or two since performance on a track is a main priority for supercars. I can Ferrari and others go the more gt route in bringing beautiful designs.

          You can make cars that are functional and beautiful too. That’s a challenge, sure, but otherwise anyone could be a designer.

      You don’t like the 488? Outside of the ugly headlights and bumper, I think it has quite beautiful lines. Did Flavio also design the LaFerrari as well? Because thats one hell of a beautiful car.

        Yes, he designed the LaFerrari, too. Both incredible cars with beautiful lines, just ugly front fascias. Not going to lie, your comment about those two being the only true Ferraris on sale today kinda cracked me up, considering the 488 saw Ferrari’s departure from the naturally aspirated engine and the LaFerrari is a hybrid.

        Yes and no, while the price and the performance will put them as pretty much direct competitors, to me the GT2 RS just like the ZL1 and the Viper ACR in the past are in a different category. I look forward to the comparison against the other “small” mid engined supercars more.

        The GTO is in theory supposed to compete with the LT version of the new Super Series (750LT or whatever), so if it does edge out the 720S on a track (which i doubt, but we’ll see) i think it’s better for us petrolheads, it’d make more interesting content

      The 458/488 were rivals for the 12C/650S. It doesn’t need to beat the 720S at all, because that’s what the McLaren fan boys want to pit it against, when it’s like you said, a 675LT rival. When the 458/488 platform is replaced by an all new one, then we can rival it against the 720S.

        But by replacing the 650S, the 720S became the new Mclaren Super Series. Just because the Mclaren 720S is faster than the 488 today doesn’t mean they don’t compete. It becomes convenient that Ferrari is a competitor only when Ferrari makes the faster car.

    Looks like the stripes indicate that the air goes through the front bumper and goes out the vent on the frunk. If that’s the case this is going to be a properly mental machine with crazy aero.

    For me, the 488 and the LaFerrari are the only true Ferrari’s on sale today. They’re both stunningly beautiful and capable machines. The other Ferrari’s are a mish-mash of large, heavy GT car with reasonably sporty dynamics and tacky/bad design.


    I don’t like the way that front looks to be honest.

      Agreed. There is a proper way to design a hardcore front bumper without it looking like a tacky carbon fiber aero kit from Vorsteiner.
