Is This Ferrari’s Upcoming 488 GTO?

It is no secret that Ferrari is working on a hardcore variant of the 488 GTB and now an image has surfaced online that appears to show the supercar without any camouflage.

This photo, initially published by Motor.es, depicts two track-focused 488s in a garage, one of which wears white plastic over its revised body panels while the front-end of the second prototype has been left exposed.

Compared to the current 488, the mid-engine supercar has received a revised front fascia that includes a different bumper with larger air intakes and some black trim. The headlights have also been blacked-out to increase the vehicle’s aggressiveness.

According to some sources, the car will be dubbed the Ferrari 488 GTO but we’re not convinced. The ‘GTO’ badge has only been used three times in the history of Ferrari production cars and even the Ferrari F12tdf wasn’t considered special enough to receive the honor.

Whatever it is called, we can expect the typical array of changes that are found on hardcore Ferrari models. Among these will be modifications to the twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 to bump power to beyond 700 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, a number of weight saving measures will need to be employed if Ferrari wants the car to have any chance against the hypercar-beating McLaren 720S.

the 4th paragraph makes a strong point for it not to be a GTO. although i cant wait to see this, whatever it is.

  • Bo Hanan

    Stradale? Yes. GTO? No.
The GTO name is reserved for flagship models and not lower end.

    • Six_Tymes

yep. Stradale would be a great idea. Did you read that as fact?

      • Bo Hanan

You’re actually fact checking my opinion? You’re an idiot.
How about you fact check which cars Ferrari christened GTO- and then go stand over there.

        • MJack

Did someone poop in your cornflakes today? Pretty sure he was agreeing with you and just asked if you had any further insights. Everyone’s allowed a grumpy day I guess…even when they’re opinion is a good one.

        • exeptor

The interpretation of Six_Tymes latest comment makes you look like an idiot, don’t you think? You gave us one only word – Stradale, with a question mark after it. This actually looks like you have some info (read it somewhere for example). And then he ask you exactly this – did you find this info somewhere. Nothing more, nothing less. And on this you answer with “you’re an idiot”. And yes – Stradale sound much more suitable for 488.

          • Bo Hanan

            MJack & exeptor-
Understanding the full context of my opinion you would know that I’m saying the Stradale (yes) makes more sense than the GTO (no) which
doesn’t. In addition, the GTO moniker is always saved for top models.
I took his question as a challenge.
            I h-o-p-e t-h-a-t h-e-l-p-s y-o-u.

          • exeptor

Don’t get us wrong. It is just the word “idiot” – quite inappropriate for the subject.
Plus why such a strong languge in a car forum full of people who loves the same things like you.

  • Balcis

now I say “this is a good nose design”.

and now I say “this is how you ‘leak’ “.

  • TheHake

I REALLY hope that Ferrari doesn’t waste the GTO moniker on a 488. That would be sacrilege.

    • Vassilis

Why? I think it’d be a deserving successor to the 288. Same size, same philosophy. Also, if it’s an homologated version of the 488 Challenge (it pretty much will be) it suits the car perfectly.

      • TheHake

Although the 288 GTO looked like a 308/328, it had much more in common with the upcoming F40 Halo car than with the 308/328 entry-level Ferrari’s. In fact, the 288 GTO evolved into the GTO Evoluzione which evolved into the F40. Making a 488 GTO will just be wrong since they will definately not use a different chassis than the 488 for it, plus the engine WILL be based on the standard 488 engine.

        • Vassilis

All that is indeed true (obviously) but it was a coincidence more than anything else. We all know what GTO stands for. So it can be applicable to any Ferrari that follows that recipe.

    Best Mclaren 720S in Desing.

  • YUDHA BAGASKARA

should be named 488 scuderia instead

    • TheHake

Or Speciale, or Challenge, or ANYTHING except GTO for that matter.

  • OG

Ferrari’s keep getting uglier and uglier

    • Joker1372

If you say so… In my opinion Ferraris are masterpieces..
