New BMW X4 Or Mercedes GLC Coupe: Yes, That’s A Tough One [w/Poll]

From the moment the first leaked photos of the new BMW X4 landed on our hands, we all scratched our heads trying to think which other model does the latest Bavarian SAC reminds us. I know, it’s hard to pin that down.

Now, and for the avoidance of being accused that we give credit to Mercedes for coming up with the whole SUV Coupe thing, we need to remind you that it’s BMW who’s originally responsible for one of the Internet’s most hated niche segments in the car world.

With that said, the distance between the Internet and the real world is rather colossal as the specific SUV sub-segment is thriving commercially around the globe, reminding us that you shouldn’t always take negative comments online seriously. (I know, right?)

The 2019 BMW X4 is now bigger, lighter and features all the high-tech stuff you would expect from a premium SUV these days. More importantly in our case, the new X4 showcases BMW’s latest interpretation of what an SUV Coupe should look like, hiding its inherently clumsy proportions under a sleeker bodywork.

So far, the only other manufacturer who tried to improve the looks of an SUV with a chopped, sloping roof was Mercedes with its GLE Coupe and GLC Coupe, with the latter arguably being the nemesis for the 2019 BMW X4. And apparently, there’s only so much a designer can do to make a car like this look better.

So let’s compare the two arch-rivals in our traditional detailed fashion and in order to find out which one wins our vote.

Obviously the two models adopt their respective companies design language at the front, making sure that their identity will be loud and clear out there, on the real world.

Things get a bit vaguer when you start comparing the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe from their other perspectives.

To make your decision a bit more difficult, we even found photos of the GLC Coupe in a similar red paintjob!

At least both of their interiors have their own distinct personality. But they both also have tablet-like displays for their infotainment systems.

Ok, let’s try to compare them one last time using a Mercedes GLC Coupe in a different shade.

That’s it then, go ahead, cast your vote and decide which one between the all-new BMW X4 and the Mercedes GLC Coupe wins this weird beauty contest, because we certainly can’t decide.

  • Obsequious Lickspittle

Where’s the none of the above button?

    • salamOOn

you dont need “none of the above button” if you dont want one from this duo.

    • Stigasawuswrecks

I’m looking for the burn with fire option.

  • LWOAP

GLC for me because the AMG version is a thing (Yes, that’s the kind of silly) plus I think it looks better than the X4. Also, I’m glad to see the polls return.

    • fabri99

Agreed on the polls, I enjoy them a lot.

    • Nordschleife

I third that. I love polls. This one split 50/50 (when I submitted my answer) which I don’t find shocking even though I prefer the GLC.

      • LWOAP

I’m surprised it’s close to 400 votes. Last I checked it was at 6. I didn’t realize that many people came here. They should leave a comment or something.

  • Hamster

    Front – both looks nice
    Side – GLC Coupe
    Rear – X4
    Interior design – X4
    Trunk opening – X4
    Rear roominess – X4
    So Overall – X4

    • Nordschleife

With only the first 4 as considerations in my book the X4 only wins the rear for me.

  • C172fccc

BMW and Merceds were not the only ones, there was Acura with the ZDX.

    • Nordschleife

It was before it’s time and unfairly unloved imo.

    • And the ZDX looked better than either of these monstrosities haha

  • roy

    F pace

  • Enter Ranting

Neither. Both are pointless and hideous.

  • baofe

No thanks, I’ll buy a regular SUV that can fit more than half a shoe unlike these two monstrosities

  • Gustavo Adriano

Unfortunately the GLC Coupé lacks originality (I don’t have to explain why, have I?), but X4 is a big deal, mainly because this new rear style. But I like a lot the Mercedes Benz GLC SUV, it’s a cool car.

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

my choice is NONE,but there is no.
İn an actual poll, poeple should have this option either. otherwise it feels little bit nonsense.

    • Nordschleife

People who don’t like either option just shouldn’t vote.

  • Christian Wimmer

Get a regular X3 or a GLC and enjoy more practicality.

These “SUV coupes” are just hideous.

  • lousydead

one ugly suv wagon coupe thingy, or another ugly suv wagon coupe thingy…. hmm i’d go with the Benz tho.

  • Honda NSX-R

I’d say none but if I had to choose, GLC. But if I could take the GLC and sell it, I’d do that.

  • DMax

BMW is atrocious. At least MB doesn’t make me want to puke looking at it.

  • fabri99

Coupe-SUVs are not for me, so I’d have none. But if I had to choose between these two, well, the X4 looks the least horrible (I actually quite dig the rear end, especially the shape of the taillights). Anyways, if you want a coupe, get a coupe, if you want a SUV get a SUV. If you want both, GET RICHER AND BUY TWO CARS.

  • iea96

    Hmm… Ugly or ugly? 🤔

  • Bash

The GLC exterior looks better imo while the bmw’s interior is nicer.

  • Vottek Mäxle

Its like choosing between two ugly women.

  • Nordschleife

The GLC looks the best to me in more categories but I do like the rear (especially the taillights) of the X4. The new X4 looks worlds better than the previous one imo.

  • Trackhacker

I’m not voting. They are both horrible haha

  • PK

    they don’t compare.

  • Subi-Rubicon1

BMW all the way. MB looks too bulbous for my taste.

  • BlackPegasus

I like the execution of the rear tail lights in the BMW better. And I’m surprised to say I’ll take the X4’s interior over the GLC. While the GLC has a very classy interior it’s starting to grow a bit stale.

  • Six Thousand Times

Obviously, neither. Not a tough one at all.

  • CBV2020

I know a station wagon when I see one.

  • GobbleUp

The bmw is hideous. Mostly the high stance and wheel arch gaps and front hood angle. Just horrible.

  • john1168

They’re both horrible. I hate these types of vehicles. The interiors are nice though, I’ll give them that.

  • S3XY

Neither. Both are ugly slow gas guzzlers that are made for superficial women.

  • Justin Spencer

The GLC has a much better profile, smoother lines and a more aggressive look. BMW dropped the ball a bit….

  • Matt

    No

  • Kash

I like the X4’s tail lights, just not on the X4’s rear end. Their design doesn’t fit the rest of the car and look like they were just thrown onto it as part of a compromise where the GLC’s overall rear end looks more composed and like there was some actual thought put into it.

  • BMW definitely one-upped Merc in making the uglier SUV Coupe. Ughh

  • KidRed

Nothing Lexus makes currently is visually appealing. So no.

  • lagunas3ca

That cleft lip look on the X4’s front just kills me.

  • Neza

I bought the BMW x4 over the Benz version, get compliments everyday!
