Next Mercedes-Benz SL To Be ‘A Real Wow Car’, CEO Says

Despite poor sales, Mercedes-Benz still has faith in the SL, so the roadster will live on for a new generation.

The successor of the current car, which has been around since 2013 and refreshed for the 2017MY, is already in development, said the company’s CEO, Dieter Zetsche, according to Autocar, during the Geneva Motor Show.

“We are working on a next generation of the SL. The plan is to make a real wow car, a stunning car”, Zetsche said. “Whenever we accomplished that in the past, the SL has had a very good performance in the market place, and that’s where we want to go.”

Further details about the new luxury roadster haven’t been disclosed, but the answer to some questions comes from a previous report, which claims that the next-gen is due in 2021. The SL is said to be developed alongside the second-gen AMG GT, which is expected to arrive one year later, and to be sportier than the current model.

In addition to extensive use of aluminum, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL will also get rear-wheel steering, optional air suspension, all-wheel drive and a slightly longer wheelbase to accommodate two rear seats.

Elsewhere, electrified powertrains are believed to be offered, too, and some speak about a possible plug-in hybrid variant to serve as an 800hp range-topper. However, that seems unlikely, given that the true ‘wow’ factor will be reserved for the next AMG GT. The latter’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, however, probably in a different state of tune, is expected to find its way under the new SL’s bonnet.

    yes, that deserves a WOW!

  • Bo Hanan

How will the SL become wow without threaten the AMG? And if they tone it down how it will not threaten the SLK, which has been gaining in size with each redesign.

    • Mynameis Taylor

I don’t think it will affect the AMG. The AMG is a true hard core sports car….where as the SL will be more of a luxury GT type car.

    • botornot387

judging by what mercedes did with the CLS and the AMG GT4door, the same will happen to this model i will bet. You will get the toned down version with a 53 top range and if you want more, mercedes will make you jump to the amg for the full effect

    • lagunas3ca

      *SLC

      • Bo Hanan

        bitch. LOL

    • Like Taylor said, SL buyers tend to be GT luxury in Monaco and Miami. But they certainly loses their appeals to car like Conti GT, DB11 and so forth. The current idea to make it “wow car” is good direction for me.

    • Merc1

You’re completely lost on what the SL, AMG or the SLK are lol.

      M

      • Bo Hanan

Why don’t share with me what they are. And it’s SLC by the way….

  • Elmediterraneo

So how if they add two more seats how the SL is gonna fit in the range with the S-class ?

    • KenjiK

Probably going to be a 2+2 seats car, the S class Coupe is closer to a full 4 seats car.

  • Lyonel Baratheon

YES! Realy WOW! But, this is Infiniti Q50/70. Where is MB?

    • NissLover

That drawing does look like a Q60. Doubt this is any indication of how it will look.

    • U8INIT

      Right Infiniti. Is that you?!🤨

  • Kagan

Who listens to them! They have said that for every car coming and no one has been wow!

  • THIS LOOS GOOD.
I WOULDN’T MIND SEEING A NEW GRILLE ON MERCEDES. TIRED OF SEEING THE SAME THING ON EVERYTHING FROM THEIR ENTRY LEVEL CARS TO THEIR HALO CARS.

    • CBV2020

And then have the nerve to toss around words like “exclusive”.

  • Nordschleife

While I love options and I really do I feel Mercedes-AMG is overlapping it’s models and if one more vehicle debuts with the E-Classes interior I am gong to scream. Lol.

  • Bash

I hope so, honestly the current SL lacks that WOW factor.

  • Navy Motorsport✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

We all should be admired at a vehicle that is 11% from 100k.

  • Astonman

    That is a beautiful render

  • Wael

Every body want to copy Hyundai hexa grill and eagle headlight

  • MultiKdizzle

    1. I believe the current SL to be quite attractive as it stands.

    2. I lack high hopes for the SL, given their current trajectory with the new, bloated AMG GT4.

    3. I see an INFINITI coupe in that render.

Just put the SL back to where it used to be: the pinnacle of all Mercedes sport cars, just like the very first generation, the 300 SL Gullwing. It was the most advanced Mercedes in its time, one of the most iconic automobiles of all time, a true flagship and also the champion in motorsports. These AMG GT names are far from the iconic status that the SL once enjoyed. SL should be far above the AMG GT label, not the other way around. It doesn’t even need an “AMG” attached to its name (like “Mercedes-AMG SL” bullshit) . It can bear its status well enough just by itself. It is Mercedes’s own fault not to maintain one of its very iconic name. Poor SL…

Use the SL name only for something truly advantgarde like the SLR McLaren, not for beach road soft cruiser.
