BMW M5 vs AMG E63 S vs Panamera Turbo S vs CTS-V: Zero to 186MPH Race

The latest crop of super saloons is now completed with the arrival of the new BMW M5, which means it’s time to get flooded with various drag races and acceleration tests.

The latest comes from Sport Auto, which pits the new BMW M5 against the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cadillac CTS-V.

The German magazine published a video showing the instrument dials of all four models during their acceleration testing, giving us an idea of what it means to have over 600hp under your right foot.

Despite Sport Auto not providing any figures with the video (you’ll have to buy their latest issue for that), it’s pretty evident of which two models compete for the title of the fastest 0-300km/h (186mph).

You guessed it, the speedo in the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S show more eagerness on their way to the big three-zero-zero figure, with third place going to the hybrid Porsche -which is the most powerful here and also the heaviest by a lot- and fourth in the Caddy –which is the only rear-driver car in the group.

Picking a definitive winner between the BMW and the Mercedes has proven to be a trick question to answer, with previous drag races so far delivering mixed results.

The E63 S offers 604 hp (612 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque against the BMW M5’s 592hp (600 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque but the Merc is also heavier by over 100kg (220lbs) so both models are really close to each other when it comes to straight-line performance.

lol nobody cares about the Cadillac CTS-V.

Pause the video at any time in the ‘race’, and you’ll notice the CTS-V is always behind.

I do. That’s why I bought one. None of the others can touch the steering feel and balance of the CTS-V.

Remember when people would mock American cars for only being fast in a straight line? Suddenly the American is not only the lightest, but the most qualified to wear the “sport sedan” badge. That’s Twilight Zone levels of irony for you.

      • Emoto

I believe that the Caddy is the only one of these cars that can be bought for 5 figures.

I would much rather pay for repairs and parts on the Caddy than the others, FWIW.

E63 S and M5 are close. I’ll choose the Mercedes.

  • jaykit

The old Chevy pushrod can’t even come close here.

Perhaps the new motor in the CT6 V-Sport in an uptune would help things along.

    • Stigasawuswrecks

It’s because all of the others have better traction because of all wheel drive. I’d still take my CTS-V over these

    • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

      It needs AWD.

  • TheToadPrince..~~ToadSquad

shouldve broughten in a charger hellcat instead of the V

      Dodge isn’t a luxury brand.

    • Emoto

The Charger isn’t going to go 1+G in cornering, like the CTS-V does.
