Porsche has been spied testing a mysterious 911 prototype at Italy’s famed Monza circuit – and it just might be very different from any 911 so far.
On first appearances, the car appears to be 911 GT2 RS based and it’d be easy to jump to the conclusion of it being an even more hardcore model for the road. However, we’re confident that’s not the case.
What we believe we’re looking at here is a 911 GT2 RSR race car that could adopt the same mid-engine layout as the ‘ordinary’ 911 RSR. If that’s the case, it will be restricted to use on the track and potentially only sold to privateer racing teams and customers.
Compared to the road-going GT2 RS, this prototype features NACA ducts on the hood like the new GT2 RS and GT3 RS, an extraordinarily large rear wing, a lowered ride height, front canards, blocked off rear side windows and an overhauled rear fascia and diffuser. The interior has also been completely stripped out and a roll cage is visible.
Filmed taking to the Monza circuit, the prototype looks phenomenally quick. It corners flat, rockets down the straights at insane speeds and altogether looks like a formidable racer.
It is difficult to know at which point development of the vehicle is right now, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it debut before the end of the year.
