Mercedes-Benz has shifted into a higher gear in the development of the all-new, second-generation CLA.
This prototype of the compact four-door coupe was scooped on the streets of Germany, and unlike the previous ones, it’s gotten rid of the plastic cladding used until now, so we can get a better look at its design.
From what we can see, even from beneath the vinyl wraps, it adopts an A-Class-like front end along with the CLA’s signature sloping roofline. The taillights remain hidden, but they appear do to be different from the ones found on the current model.

The interior isn’t visible in the short video shared below. Still, it will be more upscale compared to the model it replaces, especially with the addition of the dual-screen layout that debuted in the new A-Class hatchback. Elsewhere, we expect revised air vents, a three-spoke steering wheel, higher quality materials and new trim.
Powering the upcoming CLA will be an assortment of petrol and diesel engines shared with the A-Class. The lineup could include the new, 163 PS (161 HP / 120kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque 1.33-liter turbocharged unit as well as the 2.0-liter mill that makes 224 PS (221 HP / 165 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
Further down the road, the AMG CLA 35 will show up with some 300PS (296hp / 220kW) made from a turbo’d 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The range-topper, though, will be the AMG CLA 45, with more than 400 PS (394 HP / 295 kW) on tap.
