Pickup Gets Hit By Runaway Tires, Driver Walks Away Unharmed

The driver of this Nissan Navara scraped by with just a major scare, after his vehicle got pummeled by two runaway tires sent towards it by a passing semi truck.

While we can’t be 100% sure if the tires came from the semi, or if they were just roadside “projectiles” launched by the semi as it drove by, the speed with which they were spinning suggests that they might have already been in motion prior to being captured on camera. Either way, the stationary Navara was struck hard not once, but twice!

The initial hit was absorbed by the front right corner of the vehicle, activating both the driver and passenger airbags. The second tire however, hit a ditch initially and was catapulted way up into the air, landing directly on the roof just as the driver was getting out.

That was really, really close, wasn’t it? Look at how the driver is in a crouched position the moment after opening the door – he probably instinctively tilted his head down. Had he not gotten out of the car or just stood there for a split second more, he might have been injured as the A-pillar definitely didn’t handle that load well.

It seems like Al Pacino was right during his ‘Any Given Sunday’ speech. Life really is a game of inches, just like football, and we’re happy to see that guy walk away unharmed.

What’s discerning is it’s a truck and it was damage like it was paper.
I mean this IS the Nissan Navara, which the Nissan Frontier and Mercedes X are built off.

A rolling tyre has a lot of stored energy. It also has a narrow profile so that energy disipation is concentrated on impact.

    • TheHake

Semi tyres are huge and heavy. And at that speed there’s nothing short of a tank that would withstand the impact.

I’m thinking; you’ve got a staff member searching for car accident videos during their summer work placement? No?

  • diesel_vdub

I’ve witnessed a similar accident where a tire off a Dodge Ram pickup came off while traveling down an Interstate, bounced over the median wall and landed on an oncoming van killing the driver on impact. The tire then continued to bounce right across the Interstate before coming to rest on an embankment. They have a HUGE amount of force!

  • Paul

The guy is very lucky. There really is a lot of force behind a tire rolling like that so I’m not surprised at the damage done.
