2020 Genesis G80 Ditches Conservative Looks For More Emotion

Genesis has started testing the next G80 on public roads, with a heavily disguised prototype being spotted by our skilled spies.

With the current G80 being essentially a rebadged Hyundai Genesis, the Korean premium brand had to completely change the mid-sized executive sedan, making it not only more modern but more appealing to the eye.

Despite the covers, the new generation of the Genesis G80 does look like its gunning for a sportier design, directly inspired by the smaller G70. The end result is expected to be a sleek, wide-hipped four-door sedan that will try to keep you away from a German dealership.

The overhaul will continue inside, with Genesis expected to go with an impressive range of safety and comfort features, along with high-quality of materials and fit-and-finish. As the company’s new luxury executive sedan, the 2020 G80 will offer everything from a configurable digital instrument cluster and a last-gen connected infotainment system to the latest semi-autonomous systems.

The current Genesis G80 is powered by a V6 in both naturally aspirated and twin-turbo guises, as well as a 5.0-liter V8. It’s no secret that Genesis has been working on a new generation of electrified powertrains, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the V8 bites the dust and gets replaced by a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Genesis has been developing a mid-sized SUV as well, set to go against models like the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, among others. The Korean brand also plans to launch its first all-electric vehicle in 2021, which is said to have a driving range of at least 310 miles (500km).

As for the new Genesis G80, expect the new Korean executive sedan to launch in different regions as of late 2019.

It’s impossible to come to any conclusions with camo AND masks.

    • Six_Tymes

i know right, its the most ridiculous title.

  • PK

i can’t wait to see the interior works! genesis is doing something extraordinary! <3

    • no25

LOL define extraordinary. They still look like Hyundais with dated interiors.

      • Dude

I’d say the way they make cheap reliable luxury is very impressive. They so look Korean but some people (me too) like that. And the G80 and G90 do need updated interiors akin to the G70’s so I’m sure this refresh will dress that.

        • bd0007

Don’t quite know what “looking Korean” is, but putting that aside, the G90’s interior is still pretty nice (despite hitting its mid-life).

The current G80’s interior, however, is a bit outdated-looking and isn’t up to par.

The G70’s interior is competitive for its segment, but its aesthetics/design could have been better done.

The new G80 should be getting an all-new interior design to go along w/ the Essentia-inspired sheetmetal.

          • Dude

I didn’t mean that in a bad way. I like the style Korean automakers use. HK just has a small number of distinct design languages.

I would say that by increasing their prices and go away from the conservative look will make them lose to the LS and 7 series because those are the 2 main items in their winning

They didn’t won because of handling or tech or comfort or reliability

    “More Emotion”

    ans you can tell how?

    • botornot387

Spot on. It looks like a bloated elantra. Need to see sans camo

  • NoMan2015

“a last-gen connected infotainment system” um…proofread guys. do you mean a latest-get connected infotainment system??

  • Dr.Guillotine’sBladeSharpenerA

Maybe in USA cops will have some real high power wheels from Korea…. nay, can’t afford, ha ha ha!

    • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

Yeah, your comment made a lot of sense!

      • Dr.Guillotine’sBladeSharpenerA

        Adroit sarcasm….

  • Harry_Wild

Love if Genesis offer a lift back model G80!

  • Rocket

The silhouette is kickin’, but there seems to be awful lot of grille there. Will withhold judgement, but I’m concerned.

  • bd0007

The next generation G80 is NOT “inspired” by the smaller G70, but instead by the Essentia and GV80 concepts (basically where it gets the new grille shape and headlight/taillight treatment).

The G70 is basically the last Genesis model of the “old” design and will be getting elements of the new design language when it undergoes its refresh; the face-lifted G90 is getting that as well.

The new G80 will be getting a new base engine – a 2.5L turbo 4 (300 HP) and reportedly the turbo-6 will get a bump up in displacement to 3.5L (400+ HP).

  • Althea Later

Emotion to these guys means a larger grille, a faster roofline, and more alien looking headlamps and tail-lamps.

  • Bash

It’s the interior that I want to see the most.

  • sidewaysspin

Engineered emotion is so boring. You have to feel passion when you design it, I think.

  • vbondjr1

hoping the 5.0L V8 stays around and gets updates to the drivetrain, suspension and braking. It would be sad to see it go. We need more v8 cars.
