Tesla Has A “Surprise” For Grand Basel, Might Be The Production Roadster

Tesla has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, but the company will reportedly attempt to change the narrative by unveiling a new model at the Grand Basel Motor Show in Switzerland.

Little is known about the event, but Tesla owners were reportedly sent invitations to the unveiling which said “This September, Tesla will be showing a surprise at Grand Basel.” The invitation included a picture of a mysterious object, presumably a car, with a red and black exterior.

The teaser image didn’t reveal much, but Electrek reports the invitation confirmed the unveiling will take place on September 5th. That’s not much to go on, but speculation suggests the company will introduce the production version of the Tesla Roadster.

The model was originally unveiled last November and is slated to go into production in 2020. Tesla hasn’t released detailed specifications, but the company has previously said the model will have three electric motors and a 200 kWh battery pack which will enable the car to travel 620 miles (997 km) between charges.

The car’s range is massively impressive and so are the claimed performance figures. At the Roadster’s unveiling, Tesla said the model would rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 1.9 seconds and run the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds – 0.85 seconds faster than the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the model is slated to become one of the few convertible which can exceed speeds of 250 mph (402 km/h).

The all-wheel drive roadster has a base price of $200,000 and the company will also offer 1,000 Founders Series for an additional $50,000.

It might be that they can hit production targets? Or that they are making a profit? Or that they can make a car with 4 matching door cards?
