The Boring Company Makes Progress With Its Underground Car Transportation Plan

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has been given approval to build a tunnel and elevator system that connects to a residential garage in Hawthorne, California.

The Mercury News reports that the filing will permit The Boring Company to dig a vertical shaft in the residential garage which will extend down to an underground test tunnel running to the SpaceX headquarters. Musk wants to see cars lowered down the shaft on a specially-designed elevator and loaded onto an electric skate that can transport them through the tunnel.

Musk’s ultimate goal is to have a network of hundreds of tunnels beneath the surface of Los Angeles to cure traffic congestion. The entrepreneur believes that building down makes much more sense than introducing flying cars.

Proposals from The Boring Company involve elevators that transport vehicles from ground level to tunnels, from where they will be taken to any destination across the city. Alongside having these elevators located at homes, they would be available on the sides of public roads.

Despite the monumental costs involved with such a revolutionary transportation system, The Boring Company isn’t holding back.

“What we want to do is show proof of concept and as quickly as possible,” said company representative Brett Horton.

“We are not asking to go around the public process. Yes, we do move fast. We are trying to revolutionize transportation and don’t want to get bogged down.”

This isn’t the only project The Boring Company is involved with. In mid-June, it was announced that Musk’s firm would build an underground Loop system between Chicago O’Hare Airport and downtown.

This is the second go-round for this story. We beat it to death earlier this week. It’s NOT the solution. Prohibitively expensive and another Elon pipe dream (literally).

  • Mr. EP9

This is dumb and it won’t work. Who the F wants their garage connected to a mass transit system?

    Another dumb idea from Musk.

    • Dude

I assume it will be a private endeavor

This is Boring. a Boring dream.

  • Shobin Drogan

Wouldnt that mean instead of getting to their destinations everyone just waits to be transported in their cars causing a similar jam using this service?

  • BGM

Sir! You sully the good name of bullshit!

But seriously, the other day I had an argument with an otherwise perfectly reasonable man who thought His Muskiness was a visionary and this idea is the future. SMH!

  • Honda NSX-R

What if someone needs to chnage destinations while they’re in the tunnel?

  • Enter Ranting

I’m sure this unbelievable expensive and super complicated system will never break down. No way to get stuck in that elevator…
