2019 BMW 8-Series Convertible Uncovered Ahead Of Schedule [27 Images]

The all-new 8-Series Convertible is one of the automaker’s worst kept secrets in recent years.

After all, the spy shots we’ve seen so far revealed almost everything about BMW’s upcoming drop-top model. The only parts on the test prototypes that were covered in camo were the trunk lid and the rear fenders, leaving everything else exposed.

Well, you can now see all of the 2019 8-Series Convertible, as official photos of the new model have leaked on the internet. Belgian website Autotijn apparently broke the embargo and released a set of official images ahead of schedule.

As you probably know, the 8-Series Convertible will have its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show a month from now. Styling-wise, the cabriolet looks great with the soft top down, but the lack of a hardtop somehow makes it look more like a luxury car than a sports car. BMW describes the 8-Series Coupe as a proper sports car, so we’re curious to see if that tag will stick to the drop-top version as well.

The model in the pictures is the range-topping M850i xDrive, which is unsurprising given that the 8-Series Coupe launched in the same powertrain configuration. That means that it’s powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo gasoline V8 that’s mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The M850i xDrive Convertible will have 530 PS (523 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) to play with, enough to allow it to go from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 4 seconds. The coupe covers the same sprint in 3.7 seconds, but the cabriolet is expected to be a few tenths off the pace given the weight penalty and the increased drag.

As with the coupe, the top speed will be electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Expect to learn more details about the 2019 8-Series Convertible at the official unveiling in late November.

Special thanks to Peter for the tip!

Is anyone else thinking “6 Series” when they see this vehicle?

    • Bash

      I do, always been.

    • Christian

Well, it is a “6-series” at the end..

    • ksegg

That’s essentially want they did; they killed the 6er, renamed it 8er to move it upmarket to compete with the MB S-Class Coupe.

    • Mr. EP9

As the guy below me said. It’s a more expensive 6 series and even BMW knows it.

  • Definitely not a fan of the new BMW dials. Glad they moved away of the ugly orange glow though.

    • nauticalone

I agree. And the exhaust outlets seem about 20% too large. Otherwise I think they’re making needed improvements though! Proof will be in the driving experience!

      • Andrewthecarguy

The driving experience is the only thing that can save this thing.

        • nauticalone

Ha ha, good come back! I agree with you on the R8 being a more beautiful vehicle though.

    • adbt20

Sorry, they’ll actually still glow orange at night time.
      Just as it should be!

  • Kagan

In the pictures it actually migth look better than the coupe.

    • adbt20

      Exactly what I was thinking,
not that I like the coupé tho!

  • Blade t

I’m not a huge fan of convertibles, but I think this might look betterthan the coupe. .

What’s the real value added of this car except some additional HP that no one will use when the 4 series will get almost the same interior as we have seen in the 3 series ? The original 8 series made me love cars when i saw it in 1990 being a kid and this is no where as halo or special !

    • Jean Estel

Lol so are you saying kids today won’t fall in love with cars after seeing this or are you saying you’re still a kid and this doesn’t make you love cars? Personally I think it looks fantastic, the interior is great and the tech is amazing. Too bad as time goes on if you own the previous generation you won’t be impressed.

      • Andrewthecarguy

The point is that this iteration of the 8 Series does not move emotions like the E31 did when it was launched. BMW pulled the same 6 to 8 big coupe change but did not replace the outgoing 6 with a radical new 8 that would make me want to spend money.
In comparison, the R8 came out with an iconic shape that will always be attractive. Even the new LC500 has more character than this 8 series. Those cars move emotions, kid or not. This 8 is a dud.

  • Marc Gruben

Just not a fan of the overwrought styling of the “Ultimate Marketing Machine” anymore. This car could be elegant and timeless, but the grille, the rear bumper valance… sorry. Even if I had the money, they wouldn’t get any from me.

    • Andrewthecarguy

Couldn’t have said it better myself Marc.
This 8 is nothing but marketing.
I miss timelessness and elegance done the BMW way.
The E31 was and is still magic, the E52 was born timeless, and the i8 is future present.
You’d think BMW would make the next 8 nom to be iconic, timeless, elegant, etc.
      So sad really.

    • adbt20

Exactly my though! Another triumph of marketing over substance.
And that is why I believe it will fail to sell, just like the current generation SL… at this price it needs to be much more dignified, better proportions, much less vulgar.

Sadly, I’m not surprised. I wonder how much bigger exhaust tips will grow… Yuk!

  • TheBelltower

Despite the unnecessarily busy rear end, I love this. It looks more substantial than the S class coupe. Love the interior over the S Class also. And I do appreciate that it has real, authentic holes for the exhaust. Never thought I’d see the day when luxury brands lower themselves with the kind of plastic fakery found on cars like the Pontiac Grand Am and Honda Civic.

  • nastinupe

This is a very good looking car. I bet that it drives great too. It would be the perfect car for that guy that loves his 911 but wants more usable space.

    • exeptor

And “that guy” (😉) will replace his 911 for this?

      • nastinupe

No… at this price point guys don’t replace, they add.

      • Six Thousand Times

Not exactly the same type of car. He might trade in his Vantage or SL for it.

        • Andrewthecarguy

Vantage is sexier, SL is more svelte.
Not sure what this thing is.
A miss for BMW for sure.
          It will languish at dealers.
BMW always struggles to sell anything north of $100k unless it is truly special, and this ain’t it.

          • Six Thousand Times

Disagree about the big-butt SL and the 8 being a miss.

We’re a dying breed… because people dont know what they want anymore!
But when you show them a Z8, they can ALL agree it’s perfect!

Meanwhile, ironically, I’m impressed by Hyundai, and a big fan of Genesis.
