2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Peels Off Its Face Mask

The current-generation BMW 8 Series will have more members than ever.

Besides the already-unveiled coupe (G14) and convertible (G15) models, the 8 Series will also spawn a Gran Coupe body style (G16). To top it all off, the 8 Series Coupe and 8 Series Gran Coupe will also be available with the range-topping M8 treatment. Now, we’ve already seen spy photos of the four-door coupe but this latest set is the most revealing yet.

Whereas in previous sightings the car was almost completely camouflaged, it has now shed the disguise from the A-pillars all the way to the nose.

In fairness, we didn’t expect the 8 Series Gran Coupe would feature a different snout than its two-door siblings and the photos prove we weren’t wrong. The headlights and kidney grille are identical but the bumper does feature a different design with a much longer lower grille.

The rest of the car remains camouflaged but the contours of the bodywork are visible. The muscular rear haunches and the sculpted trunk lid are the most obvious. As for the interior, expect it to offer more passenger space thanks to the added cabin length and hopefully more headroom than the two-door coupe.

Targeting the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door, among other models, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will share the same powertrains with the rest of the lineup. Expect it to launch in M850i xDrive and 840d xDrive guises with a 523hp (530PS) 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and 315hp (320PS) 3.0-liter turbo diesel straight-six, respectively.

Later on, the top-dog M8 will arrive with an uprated twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine making more than 592 hp (600 PS), hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and the M xDrive AWD system with a 2WD mode. The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will debut sometime next year as a 2020 model.

    Hmm…so does this mean bye-bye 6 Series?

      • StrangerGP

And hello to (much) higher prices of the 8 Series.

      • Andrewthecarguy

        Minus the GT.

  • nastinupe

Hey… I have an idea of how we can make more money. Let’s stop selling the 6 Series and rebadge it an 8 Series and charge $40,000 more for basically the same vehicle. We’ll just throw a little more chrome and suede in the cabin and they will buy it!

    125 700€ without anything

    It’s way too cheap.!

  • cbATL

First – this has the profile of a Buick Regal, but probably costs $60K more in retail. Second, Cheese n’ f’en Rice, BMW is supposed to be a luxury brand – not Toyota. You don’t need 30 different models.

  • NoSnarkHere

Finally a worthy successor to the E38 7 series.

    • PK

tbh. do we even take the 7 series seriously in bmw’s lineup? i know it’s their flagship model and all but it doesn’t live up to the hype as it should be.

      • Bo Hanan

After the E38 the 7-Series cars that followed were overdone messes.

        • PK

the g11 7 series will get a facelift with same tech as the 8 series but that tech should’ve came the moment they debut the g11. i mean what kind of a strategy is that? no wonder why the s class outsells the 7 series.

funny joke there, it made me laugh.

  • Cool guy

    bavarian monkey works

  • Carenthusiast

Hofmeister kink here reminds me of Maserati Q’porte….. And not sure why this isn’t a hatchback like 4er G’coupe or A7 etc to offer some versatility. Missed opportunity I reckon

  • Ilbirs

The coupe is gorgeous. This Grand Coupe not as much, but I see that the ones who designed it cared more about functionality than what is seen on the 6 Grand Coupe.

    • Andrewthecarguy

If they sell it in this non-M guise, it will flop

  • Bo Hanan

“2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Peels Off Its Face Mask”
-because it’s face is so different from the 2 door coupes face…….

  • Yishay

Horrible. Looks nothing like the concept

  • Cobrajet

It doesn’t look elegant, very cheap looking.

  • leroy

bmw, can you at least try to be bmw?

  • Fabián Montiel

Hopefully the M8 Gran Coupe will look like the concept, because the standard versions are meh.
