Bugatti Chiron Hits 261 MPH, Sounds Like A Fighter Jet Taking Off

The Chiron’s top speed is a very delicate subject over at Bugatti. Some say that it might not be as quick as the Koenigsegg Agera RS, whereas others simply believe that they’re not interested in proving anything, at least not right now.

The Swedish hypercar managed to hit 284.3 mph (457.5 km/h). It also smashed the Chiron’s 0-249-0 mph (0-400-0 km/h) record by 5 seconds. So, it’s definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Bugatti’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, said he doesn’t know how fast the Chiron is since he has “a lot on his plate” and “the speed test is not a priority”. He previously admitted that the Chiron cannot hit 300 mph (483 km/h), as there are no tires that are certified for this speed, and then came back with a new statement in which he explained he’s not interested in a top speed run.

However, even with the speed limiter in place, the Chiron can top out at 261 mph (420 km/h). And if you’re curious how the scenery looks at that dizzying speed, then all you have to do is scroll down and watch this unofficial video.

The run rook place at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, in Florida, and the Bugatti required 2.7 miles (4.3 km) of straight line acceleration to eventually top out.

Thanks to the massive, quad turbocharged W16 engine, the hypercar sounds like a fighter jet taking off under heavy acceleration, so you might want to consider turning up the volume for a while.

That should be illegal for any car to be capable of reaching speeds over 120-miles-per-hour.

You are hilarious! Ever thought of doing a stand-up routine at a comedy club?😂

    • eb110americana

I’d support speed limiters on cars at 100 mph–if the highway patrol agreed to stop giving speeding tickets. Sure, ticket for all other kinds of reckless and distracted driving, but not something arbitrary like speed.

    • LouInPA

Fortunately for you, I don’t think any Lincoln can hit over 120mph. 🙂 Thank you for self governing.

  • DR.FUNK

Congrats to anyone who can write a check and take delivery of one of these sexy beasts.
Your purchase contract should also come with a “velocity clause” which requires you to take this puppy full-blast down a suitable wide-open paved strip…at least once.

  • LOOKS LIKE FUN.

  • Blade t

Pretty impressive, I would be scared one of my tires had a tiny flaw in it , and then it’s all over..

  • Andrew Riles

Is it just me, or did Bugatti lose interest in the top speed of the Chiron just after Koenigsegg took the record off them??

    • Tippotipo .

It is only you, my friend. Koenigsegg does not have the top speed record because the Agera RS they use is modified i.e. no side mirrors, use of race grade fuel that is E85 instead of normal premium fuel, modified wings and tapped around to improve aerodynamics as quoted by Koenigsegg themselves, basically not street legal modifications.
The Chiron has already reached 460 km/h unofficially but is currently limited by the tyres technologies. Juan Pablo Montoya wished to be the candidate to do the record after running the Chiron to its electronic top speed at least three times in casual attire. Bugatti is only interested to do reliably high performance usable by average driver. The current Bugatti boss is only interested to expand the portfolio hence the Divo project and coach building.

      • anton esbjörnsson

Have you seen the video? The side mirrors are there because the record run was in a customers car. The car was completely road legal

        • Tippotipo .

Basically a modification thus defeating the whole point.

          • anton esbjörnsson

            But there are no modificaions?
As I said the car is road legal and not changed from the standard Agera RS.

  • ErnieB

Holy jet! That thing sounds sick!!

  • Bash

    Epic!

    • Andrewthecarguy

      That’s an understatement Bash 😉

      • Bash

I know man. I just can’t do it’s justice. I really love how it sounds.

  • SteersUright

The stability at speed is astonishing. The braking from nearly 300mph is as impressive as the acceleration!

    • rodriguez256

The braking stood out to me also. That’s some crazy starting and stopping power.

      • Andrewthecarguy

And how it went from about 150mph to 250mph like it was nothing.

  • Craig

Just so you know….. at 261.696 mph – the Bugatti Chiron was covering the distance of 383.82 feet PER SECOND. That’s the distance of one standard American Football field – PLUS 23.82 feet – EVERY SECOND.

  • Wandering_Spirit

They could add two wings and ailerons and it would be good to go.

  • Thiago Pimenta Fernandes

Why did it take him so long to get to 80mph? Seems like if he had really put his foot down from the beginning he would have had more room to mantain the top speed.

  • Ray Saldanha

It beat the Chiron by 9 s in the 0-400-0 dash

  • Ben

So poised. I’d prefer something more…violet such as a Koenigsegg, but Bugatti has some incredible engineers.
