BMW X1 vs. Audi Q3 vs. Volvo XC40: Which Premium Small SUV Would You Get?

People looking to purchase a small premium European SUV can look to Germany, Britain and Sweden for answers. However, since you can argue that the GLA has fallen behind due to its age, the E-PACE is no spring chicken itself platform-wise, and the X2 isn’t as practical as the X1, we’re only left with three choices.

Among them is the Volvo XC40, the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1, all of which come with very strong selling points, so deciding on a particular model here is not easy.

Still, according to Carwow, you can make a case for the Swede being the best of the lot. The reviewer argued that the XC40 is the “coolest” and the most comfortable, which might be the most important thing when it comes to these types of vehicles.

He also found the Audi Q3 the sportiest to drive, as well as having the best interior, while the X1 was “practical and good to drive”. In other words, you really can’t go wrong with any of them, but if you really had to choose one, we can certainly understand why it would be the Volvo.

So even if the Q3 is the most fun to drive, small SUV buyers aren’t really looking for that, generally speaking. As for its excellent interior, it’s not as if the XC40’s cabin is lackluster in any way. Fair conclusion? Sound off below.

    Q3 for sure!

xc40 for me. in exact specification i would like it i would even favour it over xc60.

  • DanSemering

    Q3

  • D3X

XC40; price, styling, comfort and practicality. Sporty isn’t something of high consideration for in this segment. Volvo struck it right here.

  • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

    XC40 for sure.

The Q3 barely feels nicer than a Golf but costs FAR more, and the X1 isn’t an X anything, it is a damn hatchback with some black plastic cladding.

BMW fan here but Volvo all the way…

  • jfalckt

The contest isn’t worth taking, XC40 from the start.

  • BlackPegasus

I have to give kudos to the Audi’s new interior but the Volvo would ultimately make it into my garage.

I hate the X1 (and X2) and Q3, but for some reason I don’t mind the Volvo. Funny that.

P.S. I think the X1 is one of the most embarrassing models on the road across all makes and models available today.

  • XC40 all the way, a cool crossover that doesn’t try too hard.

  • Ary Wisesa

I’d rather pick a Mazda CX5 2.5 Turbo or Toyota RAV4 AWD or Honda CRV. SUV is supposed to be dependable, isn’t it? An X1 with 3 cylinders 1.5L engine for the price of a fully loaded Mazda CX5 or RAV4 AWD? No thanks!

    • salamOOn

all of them (cx5,rav4,crv) are 1 size up, not the same category.

      • Ary Wisesa

That’s the point. If I could have bigger and better (at least mechanically, put aside those bells and whistles like “premium” badge, leathers, chromes, and so on…) vehicle with less money, why should I pick a 3 cylinders engine in smaller package?
