DIY Reminder, Never Skimp On Masking Tape When Smoking Your Lights

Smoked taillights are almost always cool but the owner of this Chevrolet Cruze has eroded some of our faith in what darkened lights can look like.

This image shared on Reddit shows a white Cruze waiting at a traffic light with a smoked taillight on its left side. Presumably, the right taillight has also been blackened and on first impressions, it doesn’t look too bad.

Take a closer look, though, and you will notice something odd. Around the outside of the taillight is an obvious impression left behind by masking tape which was stuck on to prevent black paint from touching the the car’s white exterior. However, the DIYer responsible for this little modification failed to account for just how much overspray would be caused when using black paint across the taillight.

Sometimes even the easiest jobs can be botched

The paint is visible across much of the rear of the car, including directly above and below the taillight. It looks horrible. We suspect that if the driver didn’t immediately recognize their mistake after the little DIY job, they’ll inevitably notice the black overspray at some stage. When they do, they may be in for a little bit of a shock.

It’s not hard to smoke the taillights of your car. In fact, car owners can use a selection of different paints and spray tints to achieve the desired effect. It’s even possible to smoke a car’s taillights with removable Plasti Dip which means you’ll be able to easily rub-off any overspray you may get.

Looks like they had the tape covered, needed plastic or paper to cover the rest.

  • yonceous

rare photo of me skimping my way through life

  • Galaxium

I have never been a fan of blacking out taillights. I think it always looks better when it’s turned into a dark shade of red, instead of a brighter one.

    • BlackPegasus

Agreed. But is there such a technique or product that can give you those results?

      • Zandit75

A transparent wrap would be the best option, I believe. Should be available in different levels of tint to get the effect you desire.

    • KAG25

Some cars came with it like the VW GTI, but it was a light tint on the clear part of the lights, this is straight up limo tint

  • Nordschleife

Aww poor tink tink. That looks terrible.

  • robotlogic

Pro tip. Doing dumb stuff like this is why you have a crap job in the first place, seek help for someone with more knowledge next time, like maybe someone smart enough to tell you smoking out your tail lights is a dumb idea.

  • дапвт

Never understood smoked taillights. Why do people purposefully want to make their cars less visible at night?

    • JSR

It’s even worse in the daylight.

      • Jay

How? Vehicle is stopped or slowing down wouldn’t you be able to tell because you’re getting closer to it at a faster rate? As long as the turn signals are visible I think it’s fine.

    • rodriguez256

I’ve never understood the blacking out of the lights, both front and rear, the emblems, trim and wheels. The whole blackout looks never appealed to me and I have a strong distaste for black rims.

    • Jay

Logic? Do people, poles, trees, buildings, animals have lights/ reflectors, no. It only makes it harder if you’re only looking for a vehicles lights, look out for everything and you’ll be fine.

  • ohioplayer1177

It would take about 5 minutes to remove the whole light fixture and spray it on a piece of newspaper in the driveway or yard.

    • dll1183

Maybe years ago, but most cars require removing the bumper to remove a light assembly.

      • KAG25

I mean, they masked it off, if they would have gotten some newspaper and wrapped the body a little it would have been fine.

    • KAG25

You know he had the friend then said he had done it a 100 times

  • JSR

DIY Reminder: If you smoke your taillights, you’re a moron.

    • Aeromann

Thank you for this nice laughing.

      😂😂😂

    • Javokhir_Sam

      ROFLOL 🙂

    • rodriguez256

I guess I am truly the only one that really likes the headlight style of the 720S. I’ve only ever heard people’s distaste for them. I like that it firstly looks good, to me at least and that it looks no other headlight design.

      • baofe

        unique yes, good idk

      • KAG25

It has many designs in one, a light, wing and a intake in one area.

      • Bill Nguyen

Nah, I like it too. At least it’s original, and has a practical use too.

    • KAG25

You know that is also a air intake

      • THEY DON’T NEED TO LOOK LIKE BLACK EYES OR PANDAS.

        • KAG25

why you hate pandas! plus, that is carbon fiber

          • I THINK THE HEADLIGHT TREATMENT RUINS THE FRONT END. CARBON FIBER DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BLACK, THE REST OF THE CAR IS PAINTED.

Automakers spend about $500,000,000 developing a new car. You aren’t going to make it better with a $3 can of BS from Amazon.

    • dll1183

Automakers also approve all sorts of idiotic things themselves.

    • Pavel B.

It wasn’t amazon. It was autozone.

    • TB

      LOL!!

  • Aeromann

Never understood smoked glass windows either.

    • KAG25

      You mean window tint?

      • Aeromann

        Yep. When it’s completely black.

        • KAG25

limo tint is illegal on normal cars in most states, people doing it probably register the cars in different states

          • Aeromann

            That’s possible.

    • psiqtas

Because You probably don’t live or never been in warm countries/”hot states” where there can be very high especially during summer, beside having an dark car (even don’t have to be only black)… Believe me or not, but dark tinted windows can make up to 50% difference in the cabin.

      • Aeromann

I believe you and I know it can make the difference. But in cold countries, the reasons are different : they want to be hidden. For which reasons? I don’t know. Maybe they can smoke marijuana or drink beer while driving and cops cannot see them.

  • TB

    Honestly…who does this anymore??

  • salamOOn

why is this modification not illegal…?
