New Genesis G80 Coming In September, Will Ditch The V8

Genesis’ CEO has confirmed the 2020 G80 will be introduced in South Korea this September.

Speaking with Car & Driver, Manfred Fitzgerald said the redesigned sedan will feature the “next evolution of our design language” and roll out to global markets following its domestic launch.

There’s no word on when the model will arrive in America, but Fitzgerald confirmed the car won’t be offered with a V8 engine. This is somewhat surprising as the current G80 is available a 5.0-liter V8 that produces up to 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque.

Since the V8 is a no-go, the range-topping engine will be likely be a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 that develops 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 376 lb-ft (509 Nm) of torque. It’s significantly less powerful than the V8, but it’s not that much more fuel efficient as the current G80 with the twin-turbo V6 is only rated 1 mpg – city, highway and combined – better than the V8 variant.

The V8 engine should continue to be offered in the G90, but it appears to be living on borrowed time. As Fitzgerald explained, “Don’t expect another evolution of the V8” as “We really have to pay close attention to markets and legislation, and hedge our bets.”

Since Fitzgerald ruled out the possibility of upgrading the engine, it appears Genesis is eyeing a future without the V8. As a result, we shouldn’t expect to see it in any upcoming models and it will likely be phased out when the G90 is redesigned.

The news will probably disappoint fans, but Genesis is embracing electrification. As part of a plan announced in 2017, Genesis will launch its first electric vehicle in 2021. It will eventually be followed by a longer range model which can travel at least 310 miles (500 km).

They’re killing the V8, but you can bet the 365 HP twin-turbo V6 won’t top the range. I’d wager a plug-in hybrid model is slated for that position.

New 400+ HP 3.5TT and add battery power – over 500+ HP.

I literally saw these yesterday going down the 15. I even waved at the driver. LOL

I’m so jealous. What type of presence did they have?

  • SteersUright

Overall shape looks quite elegant. Shame about the V8 though, its always a conversation piece and nothing else sounds quite like it. Why no V8 hybrids with smaller V8’s and better fuel economy?

the CAFE Standards crap, get rid of CAFE Standards.

      • bd0007

CAFE has nothing on what Europe and China are doing.

Plus, the new 3.5TT V6 will have 400+ HP and w/ the addition of battery/electric motors – 500+ HP is entirely doable.

I absolutely love Genesis, but they were straight disrespectful at both auto shows. They didn’t not showcase the new facelifted G90. I was so pissed.

    • PK

especially in the nyias! oh and no bmw as well! i was mega pissed!!!!

    • bd0007

The reason for that was b/c didn’t want to take the shine off the G70 or the 2019 G90 (both of which were rolling into newly established Genesis dealerships).

      • donald seymour

I know, I was talking about them not showcasing the newly facelifted G90 at the autoshow. I went to both auto shows and the G90 facelifted version wasn’t there.

  • Maykel

    New TT V6 coming, probably.

  • BlackPegasus

Looks like the G80 will have the Superman crest just like the G90…. 😒

The CEO confirmed that the Tau engine will be killed. It will be used in the facelifted G90 and then that’s it. But Tau was old and none of the Asian automakers that Genesis competes most directly with have a unibody V8 suv so they probably saw that upgrading the Tau wasn’t worth the money given the current market direction.

Thanks for the info…I just hope the new power-train in the GV80 will out do the V8.
