2020 Honda Pilot Black Edition Headlines Model Year Updates, Costs $50k

For some reason, automakers believe that simply blacking out a vehicle’s body and exterior accessories is a magic recipe for commercial success.

This has been going on for a while so we assume it is actually working — otherwise we would not see so many “Black Edition” models launched, would we? The latest one comes from Honda and is based on the 2020 Pilot.

Arriving in dealerships tomorrow, the new Black Edition trim sits at the top of the 2020 Honda Pilot lineup with an MSRP of $49,620 (excluding $1,095 destination). Since that’s an increase of almost 50 percent over the base Pilot LX which starts at $31,550, we figured the Black Edition should bring more than just a sinister styling upgrade.

It does, but let’s focus on the black stuff first. Inspired by the Honda Ridgeline Black Edition, the new range-topping Pilot comes finished exclusively in Crystal Black Pearl paint and features Black Edition badges on the grille and tailgate. The SUV rides on black-painted 20-inch alloys and features blackout treatments for the grille, headlight trim, side trim, door handles, window trim, and fog light accents.

Inside, red accent lighting for the dash, doors and center console are combined with red accent stitching on the front and second row captain’s chairs, door panels, and steering wheel. Other distinctive touches include Black Edition logos embossed on front seats and floor mats, as well as red accents on the perforated leather for the front and second-row seats.

Based on the range-topping Elite trim, the 2020 Pilot Black Edition is basically a fully-loaded model. Standard features include a nine-speed automatic transmission, intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM) all-wheel-drive system with true torque-vectoring, second-row Captain’s Chairs, the Honda Sensing safety pack, and more.

Technology highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, CabinTalk in-vehicle public address system, wireless smartphone charging, a hands-free power tailgate, and 4G LTE in-vehicle Wi-Fi capability/compatibility.

It looks really good and will be bulletproof reliable.

I’d rather just take a Touring or an Elite and save some $$$ though…

    • TB

Agreed…and maybe get that black grille afterward.

      • Bash

Yep. I had that thought too.

    • Da Only Skid

I see what you didn’t mean, “bulletproof.”

      • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

        Bulletproof reliable.

        Pilots are reliable as gravity.

        • Da Only Skid

Gravity is a given by most sciences, can’t say the same for the ruggedness of a Pilot.

The 2020 Ford exploder is almost reliable as this Pilot

    • FordMopar
      • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

This has two rows, Pilot has three.

Also, the Edge ST has been getting terrible reviews.

  • WalthamDan

Did they ever get that 9 speed tran straightened out?

    • Alduin

Nope still the same pos thats also in Jeep Cherokees and Renegades.

  • Six_Tymes

LMAO @50K ” a sucker is born every minute”

  • FordMopar

They used Chevy Blazer playbook…. hey look over there… Edge ST is looking good with the price!

    • NormT

The problem is Chevy and Ford will have $10,000 off MSRP. Honda will not.

  • Alduin

HAHAHA insanity. Who would buy this? Especially for 50 grand?

  • Super Rob

Looked at the Pilot and Passport a few weeks ago. Can’t stand the fold down little armrests instead of a middle console. It is a deal breaker for me. The CRV has the big nice console arm rest.

  • FordMopar

Little over 42 grand for similar competitor with same mileage but bigger, powerful engine- Edge ST. This Telluride is pretty nice looking! Anything but Passport!

  • jason wu

50k for the last model year of current Pilot. No thanks.

    • Harry_Wild

It is $51K MSRP before MAP add on!

    • Navigator Navy✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ?

Not including the self-healing paint for an additional $3k that sales consultant will try to seduce on the vehicle payment, gap insurance, and inclination sensors that would increase the price to $3K more dollars, which if the vehicle is traded within 3 years, the consumer will have an upside down loan.

  • Curtis Lackey

Looks like they are not interested in selling in Arizona where summers (8 months long) are over 100 degrees.

  • MarkoS

FGS! ENOUGH with the Silly black out, black wheel trend. All it says is I am yesterday!

    • sidewaysspin

Was very common in the early….20th century!

    • NormT

Hey, it worked for Nissan Rogue!

  • NormT

When the sales drop in first half of 2019, hurry up with the Special Edition trim levels!
