BMW Doesn’t Care About AWD Uber Hatches, Will Roll Out More M2 Variants Instead

BMW has confirmed that new variants of the M2 are in the works, giving petrolheads one more reason to be excited about Bavaria’s offerings.

Following the recent launch of the new Mercedes-AMG A45 and BMW M135i, there has been a lot of talk about whether or not BMW M will produce a 400 hp version of the 1-Series to compete with the A45.

The German car manufacturer has repeatedly said that it won’t and during a recent interview with Top Gear, M Division boss Marcus Flasch said the M2 is its alternative to the all-wheel hot hatches being built by its competitors.

“The M2 is my favorite M car too,” Flasch said after Top Gear’s journalist expressed his admiration for the rear-wheel drive sports car. “It’s got so much character. Not every driver goes to tracks and uses all the performance, but in the M2 you feel the character at the first roundabout. It’s got precise steering, an agile drivetrain, manual shift. We will continue to offer manual when customers demand it. It’s about being fun to drive.”

“We’ll do more special models of the M cars, limited edition CS versions,” Flasch added.

According to reports, the upcoming M2 CS will be a lighter, more powerful, and faster version of the current M2 Competition. This means it will be powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six with in excess of 404 hp and 405 lb-ft (549 Nm) of torque and should be an absolute joy to drive.

While we’re sure BMW could create an amazing 1-Series M, we are more than happy (actually, make that delighted) to hear that the fabulous RWD compact coupe is not going anywhere but will instead only get better.

Or perhaps they can’t make an uber hot hatch but have no trouble making uber fast SUVs. Anyway, more M2 variants are nice. It’s about the only M badged model in the lineup that’s actually worth a damn – it’s what BMWs should be.

Good! The M2 is the reincarnation of the e30 M3. An M2 with a 404hp straight six would be insanely fun.

    • Elmediterraneo

      That’s already what the M2 Competition is…

Yes. I guess I was typing what I was daydreaming about. As-in “…would be fun for me to drive!”

Lame. Make awesome editions of all your cars. Stop making excuses.
