Ford Working On New Global Crossover To Rival Subaru Outback

Ford is said to be preparing to introduce an all-new crossover in early 2021 to effectively replace models including the Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy in Europe.

Autocar says that the new crossover will be built around the car manufacturer’s flexible C2 platform and be sold in both petrol and diesel forms. In addition, a 48-volt mild-hybrid petrol option will be available alongside a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo which includes a belt-driven electric motor.

Limited other details about the vehicle are known but considering Ford will use it to effectively replace three different vehicles, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it offered in a number of different guises appealing to different customers.

Unnamed sources tell the publication that the vehicle could be similar in shape and size to the Subaru Outback and be sold throughout North America as well as much of Europe.

News that Ford is working on a new global crossover shouldn’t come as a shock considering the car manufacturer’s move away from traditionally-shaped cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs.

The Subaru Outback is quite a small player in many markets around the world but in the United States, is exceptionally popular and in recent years, more than 150,000 examples have been sold annually. Clearly, there is a significant amount of demand for these high-riding vehicles across the country and Ford will hope its new model allows it to snatch away sales from some of its rivals while boosting its own sales and profitability.

I really like the Puma pictured. If a “crossover” is nothing more than an AWD hatchback with an extra inch of wheel clearance, then I’m good with that. The last thing we need on the roads are more Dodge BOAR style vehicles.

Hey!!! I actually promise that I came to say that that Puma is growing on me. But then read that dodge hate line. Come on man. lol

      • TheBelltower

Not anti-Dodge… I’m just on this anti RAM kick today. I just saw one this morning at a stop light and it just caused a visceral reaction. It’s just a flaw of mine! It’ll pass. Love the Puma.

america’s own focus active wagon perhaps?

A Focus Wagon…. not a good Idea for the US.

  • designer_dick

This will be the replacement for the Fusion in the US, and the Mondeo, Galaxy and S-MAX in Europe. Given that crossover fever means even the miserable, truly repugnant EcoSport can manage sales of over 100,000 in Europe, I think this will sell far better than the three cars it’s replacing.

If they could make something worthy of going off road a bit instead of just another poser it would be awesome.

  • JRP

It’s the next gen Fusion. It will come in crossover, sedan, and possibly a wagon form (for Europe) and will compete against th Buick Regal and Regal TourX and Subaru Legacy and Outback in the US and will be the only Ford sedan in the US.
