MG Racks Up 2,000 Orders For ZS EV, Extends Discounts To Next 1,000 Buyers

The MG ZS EV crossover seems to be off to a good start in the UK, as the SAIC-owned automaker has announced it has already received 2,000 orders in the two months since the car’s launch.

To keep the momentum going, MG says it will continue to match the government’s £3,500 Plug-in Car Grant on the range-topping Exclusive trim level, while also offering a £3,000 grant for the base Excite model. The offer applies to the next 1,000 customers.

Including the grants from the government and MG, the ZS EV Exclusive starts from £23,495 (approximately $29,275) while the base Excite trim level can be had for £21,995 ($27,390).

“Since the official launch of the ZS EV in July, MG dealerships across the country have reported unprecedented demand from customers eager to get behind the wheel,” said Daniel Gregorious, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG Motor UK. “We have listened to all of the positive feedback and are delighted to offer this fully electric family SUV to the next 1,000 retail buyers from just £21,995,” he added.

The MG ZS EV offers a 163-mile (262-km) driving range thanks to a 44.5-kWh water-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack that can be replenished to 80 percent in about 30 minutes using a fast charger. The electric crossover is powered by a front-mounted electric motor delivering 141 HP (143 PS) and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque.

Sttandard specification for the base ZS EV Excite includes 17-inch alloys, an eight-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and DAB radio, as well as the MG Pilot safety suite that bundles driver aids such as Advanced Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.

    Nice.
    Next please!

I know that it’s not really an MG anymore, and it’s built in China, but their looks and abilities are improving significantly with each model, and far stronger sales in the UK are proof of that. This EV version could be their turning point to becoming a more widespread name.

The regular ZS is a decent quality item – certainly no worse than its competitors with list prices that start from at least £4,000 higher. The EV version’s extra weight has apparently eliminated the petrol-engined car’s tendency to pogo down the road if it encounters a deep pothole, so that can only be considered a bonus.

Pardon the ignorance… we don’t have MG in the US. Is this company owned or related in some way to Mazda?

    • jfalckt

It’s owned by SAIC in China, there’s no relation at all to Mazda I know of.
The only connection must be MG designers total adoration of Mazda’s design work!

    • designer_dick

No Mazda connection, other than the artfully arranged collection of styling cues liberally borrowed from Mazda, Kia, Hyundai, and several others.

      • carlbolt

Don’t see any of thing from the brands you mentioned.
        How snobbish people can be!

        • designer_dick

So snobbish that I considered buying one, because I think it’s a nice looking small SUV. Noticing styling cues borrowed from or inspired by other manufacturers doesn’t mean I’m a snob, it means my eyes work.

2000 orders in 2 months is a good number? I’d say it’s pretty weak.

    • designer_dick

For MG, it’s very good. They sold a total of 5,376 petrol-powered ZSs in the UK in 2018, so receiving 2,000 orders for the EV version in two months is actually pretty solid.
