2020 Toyota Supra And VW Golf R Engage In Drag War

Due to mixing its Japanese DNA with that of Bavaria, the all-new Supra has received some flak. However, it actually is a very capable sports car in its own right.

Its predecessor used to be a common sight at drag strips all over the world, with most examples were far from stock.

This 2020 Supra however, doesn’t feature any mods whatsoever, so the 3.0-liter, inline-six kicks out 335 HP (340 PS / 250 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Nought to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) is dispatched in 4.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The challenger to the rear-wheel drive sports car was none other than a Volkswagen Golf R. The all-wheel drive hot hatch can still teach a lesson or two to most of its rivals, despite being almost ready to be retired. Powering it is a 2.0-liter turbo-four that produces 306 hp (310 PS / 228 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, which helps it rocket to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds. Get it with the optional Performance Pack and top speed will lift to 168 mph (270 km/h).

Being 0.3 seconds quicker to 62 mph than the Golf R and slightly more powerful, the Supra is the favorite in this race. However, everyone knows that the German hot hatch is a die-hard machine, plus it’s got all-wheel drive on its side, the outcome is not as clear-cut as it might seem at first glance.

The Golf GTI and R are currently my favorite “little cars” in the market. However, if Honda’s E finds its way to the states I’m dead set on buying one. It’d be a perfect city car and I just love the styling.

    • Holmer_k

The Golf is a nice car if a little on the bland side styling wise and I also share your enthusiasm for the Honda E since the very first new car I bought was a Honda. But I’d also give mention to another car because I just did a test drive of the Veloster N yesterday just because they are running a promotion giving us a $50 prepaid Visa card right now to take a drive and I was super impressed with it. It’s been a while since I was behind the wheel in a car with a manual transmission and I found it a very fun little car to drive.

With this post Hyundai’s $50 is well spent.

        • Holmer_k

Yeah maybe. But when was the last time you got paid to take a test drive? It’s worth a shout out.

      Not mine thanks to #Dieselgate
I personally will NEVER buy a VW Company product because of that intentional fiasco.

      • Ben

I’m not excusing it, but there are plenty of known scandals in the automotive industry. They eventually subside from the public’s mind when making a new car purchase. However, I applaud you for voting with your dollar. Not to many consumers do that anymore. They just take to Twitter and join the peanut gallery. If you don’t mind, what car do you currently drive now?

      • BM206

That is your loss, and I don’t think VW will care.

      • Kevin Cagle

Sure hope you aren’t a Ford guy. I think what they did in the tire inflation scandal was far more egregious than cheating on diesel tests.

  • Bo Hanan

IMO these kind of comparisons don’t help the the new Supra’s image… Just sayin.

  • getoffme

There is something wrong with the Supra driver.

  • BM206

Two to the Golf, zip for the Supra given the latter massively jumped the start of the first race.

    It’s not even a Toyota.
