2020 Bentley Flying Spur Makes A Great Case For Big Luxury Saloons

With the world steadily turning its back on luxury saloons, we get less such models. Luckily, Bentley is one company that’s not willing to drop them, despite the success of the Bentayga SUV.

Based on the latest Continental GT, which shares its platform with the Porsche Panamera, the Flying Spur is aimed at those who still see the greatness of such cars. It’s still big, heavy and fitted with a lot of luxury amenities, but the British high-end saloon also packs new technologies and a powerful W12 that will make you forget about its gargantuan size.

Pushing the throttle all the way down unleashes 626 HP (635 PS / 467 kW) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. The twin-turbo engine is paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, lifted from Porsche and further refined by Bentley, and rockets it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.8 seconds and all the way up to 207 mph (333 km/h), despite weighing almost 2.5 tons (~5,500 lbs).

In normal driving conditions, the new Flying Spur is very calm, refined and quiet. It also features cylinder deactivation technology and, in cornering, you will often forget that you’re cruising in something that’s actually longer than the Audi A8 L thanks to the rear-wheel steering. Moreover, stopping power is provided by the biggest steel brakes ever fitted to a passenger car.

So, is Bentley’s saloon the kind of car you’d actually want to drive, or be driven around in? That’s a very good first-world problem to have if you ask us, and you can solve it by watching Carfections’ review below.

Come on Mr Hallmark, you were around when this ugly brute was signed off (unlike the quite hideous Bentabus which you can blame on your predecessors). Where’s the beauties that you spearheaded when brand director at Jaguar? You need to engage Ian Callum’s design shop now he’s gone independent. No more tat! Bentley deserves much, much better.

      Oolio Toolio strikes again!

  • Merc1

    Ridiculously stunning car.

  • MarkoS

By far the most stunning modern sedan and one of the best looking cars period produced today.

  • Aelwyn

Ah, the sedan of choice for the well-heeled septuagenarian. The design already looks a decade old. I’m sure they were hoping for timeless, but I’m just getting S-Type vibes.

    • Matt

…and yet everyone else thinks the design is stunning.

      • Aelwyn

Think you need to read the comments a little more closely.

        • Andrewthecarguy

You’d do well to heed your own advice A 😉

  • Six_Tymes

what is that annoying click sound while he is driving? the Bentley is quite awesome.

  • tt tt

Why the hell would you wear a loose button vest on a T shirt?
    Stunning car btw.

    • Andrewthecarguy

      Because he can.

  • BlackPegasus

The profile reminds me of a Buick LaCrosse

    • Merc1

      Get your eyes checked.

      • BlackPegasus

My eyes could use an exam, but that won’t excuse the similarities found in the profiles of these cars. Look at the hip lines, fake fender ports and even the wheel design. ??https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ef176c3d6db8ed45b4eaf8af2ae9a756062e96d44f5f750d6fba9939f69c1908.jpg

        • Rahul Mandala

Lol why do you speak like Buick invented hip lines, fake fender ports, and that wheel design, when there are many other wheel designs. There are infinitely more ways a Bentley could be specced than that Buick. So stop trying hard to make it seem like these two even look alike.

          • benT

the black peg is too young to know better- intellectually bankrupt.
He should be in the outdoors learning about actual pegging.

        • Merc1

The Bentley doesn’t look anything like the FWD GM heap, beyond that rear door crease and it certainly won’t be mistaken for a Buick on the road.

        • benT

The items pointed to are in fact BENTLEY cues and the US maker has copied THEM.

too bad that individual seats option are gone

  • Rivaldo

Very beatiful car, almost perfect, the only competitor will be the next Rolls Ghost.

  • Cevair Zufer

Maybe front ok but not back and side. It almost looks like a 300 in profile with the low roof.

I mostly like the interior, classical. Compare it to the upcoming S class tesla!

  • Loquacious Borborygmus

That’s one strange accent. Born in Glasgow, moved to the Netherlands and has worked in England for a decade and a half.

  • pcurve

$210k base? not cheap, but seems like a decent value compared against v12 s class.

  • Charles Chin

Too big of a Q car even when money not an issue.

  • JonPaul

I certainly wouldn’t kick it out of bed for seeping oil.
