The Smoking Tire has provided us with our very chance to hear the 2020 Corvette Stingray with the Z51 package being driven to its limits with nothing but engine and exhaust sounds to enjoy.

The clip, filmed as part of Road & Track’s ‘Performance Car of the Year’ test, doesn’t reveal what Matt Farah thinks of the new ‘Vette, as press reviews of the mid-engined sports car are under embargo until October 16. What it does give us, though, is a chance to see just how capable the C8 appears to be on a racetrack.

As the new Corvette is powered by a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, it should come as no surprise that it sounds good. Whether or not it sounds as vicious as the C7 Corvette is hard to determine from this video alone. One thing we can definitely say about the new car is that its 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission changes gears far quicker than the old automatic ‘box of its predecessor.

It also appears as though the C8 is very easy to drive fast and that it doesn’t suffer from all that much understeer, an undesirable trait that can be all too common on mid-engined sports cars. Out of some corners, the car’s tail end does get a little bit loose, but it seems to be much more planted than the C7.

With good looks and an attractive starting price, it seems inevitable that the C8 Corvette will prove a runaway success for the company. If reviewers give it the thumbs up, we’ve got no doubt that people will rush to their local Chevrolet dealerships to lock in orders.
