2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S Named Motor Trend’s 2019 Best Driver’s Car

Motor Trend has named the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S as 2019’s Best Driver’s car, making it the fifth Porsche to win the award since 2007.

The U.S. publication gathered 12 of the market’s finest performance vehicles for testing. These included the Porsche 911 Carrera S, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, Bentley Continental GT V8, BMW M2 Competition, BMW M850i xDrive, Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, Jaguar XE SV Project 8, Lamborghini Urus, McLaren Senna, Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+, and the Toyota GR Supra.

These vehicles “endured a battery of tests” at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California before being driven along some of California’s finest coastal roads and across a closed-off section of State Route 198 near Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park. All 12 cars were then taken to their absolute limits by racing driver Randy Pobst at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Motor Trend’s 2020 911 Carrera S came adorned with the available Sport package, Sport Chrono package, PASM sport suspension, rear-axle steering, and PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes. Motor Trend praised the car for its breadth of abilities. On a track, the car is also supremely fast and was only bested by the McLaren Senna at Laguna Seca.

“The Porsche 911 Carrera S 992 is our Best Driver’s Car because no other car on the road offers such levels of performance in such a driver-friendly package,” Motor Trend executive editor Mark Rechtin said. “The Porsche’s singular focus on the driving experience is a potent combination of control, responsiveness, and pure speed. There is a precision to the Porsche’s acceleration, braking, and handling that no other car could match.”

How much longer til I get mine?

  • The Tesla Model 3 Perfomance should had won.. Fault play…

    • Stephen G

As humans we tend to put things in categories usually by perceptions or preconceived notions. Whether justified or not I don’t think many people consider any Tesla, outside the Roadster, as a Performance” car. We all know that they are highly capable machines and a Model S certainly would have held it’s own. Just to add, I don’t think I would have chosen the Continental GT for this category.

Quid pro quo for Syria no doubt.

      • Ben

You could make a case for the Bentley being there as it currently seems to be the gold standard for a classic GT. You could throw a Turbo S in that discussion too.

Some publications seem to shoehorn Teslas into every discussion not because of their overall ability, but their power plant. I don’t think anyone would believe a Model 3 is an overall better drivers car than the rest of the competition.

Its not a bad car, but why waste the spot just to say “Yeah, we know the Model 3 can’t compete with these overall, but its fun…for an electric vehicle”?

        • Stephen G

“I don’t think anyone would believe a Model 3 is an overall better drivers car than the rest of the competition”
Yeah. That’s what I meant when I wrote “perceptions or preconceived notions”.

          • Ben

Are there any performance numbers, lap times or records that would shows us different other than a quick 0-60? The model 3 is a great car, in its own lane. Had they included it and it lost out, fans would complain about such a mismatch or varied ethos between the EV and sports cars.

You missed the part “BEST DRIVER’s car”.

Teslas are just a car to go from point A to B.

actually they cause MORE CO2 than a porsche! get your facts straight!

Read DRIVERS CAR, not fastest accelerating car or lowest MPGe car or ugliest car. The Model 3 wins in nothing for real.

Where’s the C8 in this test?

    • Do you think the car is out for the Motorjournalist yet….

      • Ben

        Yes, many have driven it.

        • What I am sying is… The car wasn’t “ready” when the recored it…Jezz, some pople don’t think anymore… But hey, look at the US Presi

Road and Track tested the Corvette C8 in September for their PCOTY. Stay informed.

          • Two words – Pre Production

The following was quoted from Matt Farah, one of the drivers of the Corvette C8 during its evaluation during Road & Track’s 2020 PCOTY:

In the video I said this Corvette was a hand built prototype[pre-production]. That actually turned out to not be the case. They said it was built at the factory, on the [production]line and it was VIN number 19, just to clear that one up a bit.

Matt Farah of the Smoking Tire in association with Road & Track’s 2020 PCOTY

Going back to your point, the vehicle has been driven by many automotive journalist, mainly those associated with larger publications such as Road & Track, Motor Trend, Car And Driver, and more. Chevy sent models to publications that fully represented the stated performance figures allowing publications to post performance statistics without asterisk.

    • Stephen G

Very good point. The article is specific that “12 of the market’s FINEST performance vehicles” were chosen. Could this be some kind of a slant at GM? Although I’ve never driven one, so unfairly I may understand why the Fiat 500 Abarth was not included.

      • Matt

No the c8 testers came out too late for it to be in this group. gm has won performance car of the year from them before

    • Rimas Kurtinaitis

      Where it should be.

    • Matteo Tommasi

Is waiting to be released. The C8 will be in for next year (but we all know the Ferrari SF90 will win).

  • javier

obviously this test does not consider price

    • Nastinupe1911

No, most of these tests don’t. Where if you been?
